Breastfeeding pain??

Hey ladies...so I've noticed that my milk supply has been dwindling, so I've been working extra hard to produce more. I've been pumping every 2 hours and nursing in between that (even in the middle of the night). But as of recently, I've been having these intense burning, shooting pains in my breasts. Before it was just when my daughter was nursing, but now they throb and ache constantly. It's to the point now that I dread nursing because the pain is so bad. Along with the pain, my breasts are also very warm. Has anyone experienced this?? Did I just work them too hard? Is there any way to alleviate this pain?

That sounds like mastitis. I would definitely call your OB! You could also have the wrong flange size for your pump. But pain + warmth makes me think mastitis.

Are you pumping when you nurse, or are you expressing every hour? If the pain and heat are localized to one area I'd be concerned about mastitis, but if it's in different parts of your breasts then it might just be your milk coming in more frequently than you're used to. I get a lightning type feeling with mine.

Sounds like mastitis for sure! Definitely call your OB

Thrush also causes pain

@Nicole So I pump every 3 hours and I nurse on demand all throughout the day. The heat is pretty localized in one area :/

I was having this issue Hurt so bad I think it was the pump 24 cup I couldn’t even put baby on me

@Ashley localized heat is almost always infection, especially with pain :(

That sounds like thrush

I just experienced this and it was diagnosed as thrush. Check your baby’s mouth. If you see white spots on the roof of the mouth or tongue that’s a pretty good indicator it’s thrush. Our pediatrician prescribed a topical ointment that has been helping. Good luck!

I’m going to vote Thrush because I currently have it too and yes it’s a strong burning pain in nipples. My nips were red too. My midwife gave me a pretty nice nipple cream with nystatin. The white patches in mouth will tell you the difference.
