Sure start maternity grant…

So just a question, I’m looking at the eligibility of receiving the sure start maternity grant, this is my first child, I’m currently 32 weeks. I’m about to go on maternity leave and know I will struggle with money due to also moving house and other expenses. So I was told to have a look if I could get this grant. My question is, what qualifys as a ‘partner’ as me and baby daddy don’t live together at the moment and we’re not married or anything. So can I make the claim alone or?

You have to receive one of the benefits (UC being one) to be qualified for mat grant.

@Thao it also says if it’s your first child you can apply ?

Oh yeh, 1st child or multiples.

It needs to be a 1st child plus you have to be on some sort of benefit already

Yeah. Basically you would be classed as single. So make sure you state that too

Eurgh, why is it working people get no help, the system is so fucked. I don’t get any benefits because I work full time, but even that isn’t enough. 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️

I work and I get help. I just don't work full time as a single mum I physically can't

Exactly my thoughts… this £500 should be for all mum’s expecting a first child and not just for people already on benefits

Wow. Judgy post she was only asking a question....we all have choices 🤗

@Mel if this comment was for me, I’m not judging at all! I was just saying it would be nice for everyone to have a £500 head start towards their first baby. I understand there’s people who need more help than others therefore they claim benefits and that’s absolutely alright. Even for people who work the salaries are crap these days, this economy is messed up unfortunately 😭

@Beatriz tbh I do sort of back this up from someone’s who’s on uc only because I didnt qualify for maternity leave. I got the grant when we didn’t entirely need it

@Emily and another thing that needs fixing asap is the maternity/paternity leaves. I know other countries are worse but here is appalling as well 😭

I spoke to them the other day I was advised to claim for uc even if you don't get a uc payment you'll still be "on the books" things change change you can get the grant up to 6 months after baby is born as circumstances can change x

If you don't live with your partner then he doesn't count as your partner for universal credit purposes, so you don't need to include him on your claim. I would start a universal credit claim as soon as you have your baby because between that and your pay going down to smp, you will likely be entitled to something. Then after you get your first universal credit payment you can apply for the sure start grant, as you have until 6 months after your baby is born to do it :)

@Beatriz definitely but the UK is in a crisis
