Blocked duct?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone might have more info than me.. I pumped from my breast at 1sm yesterday and it’s 3am the next day in between that time my little one has breast fed multiple times off that boob and I thought give it a rest from pumping… I’ve woken up and it’s rock hard with lumps at the top of it which you can see and feel- it also is so painful it feels like it’s been hit with a bat - I’ve just pumped from it now and breast fed off left boob to see if that helps and it still produced 100ml of milk but is still sore… any recommendations please? Or has anyone else experienced this… Thanks in advance x

Ice packs help! And gentle massage in circular motion towards the nipple

It sounds like you have a clogged duct. It commonly happens when you pump more. Try massaging your breasts as you are pumping to release the pressure. Put a warm cloth on it and massage it to unclog it as well. And try to keep your pump sessions to 5-10 mins per breast to decrease the chances of a clogged duct.

Will go to the compress now 😭That’s a good shout doing both in one session. I normally do 40mins on one- then in the next pump do 40 mins on the other. Will try that

I would keep pumping and feeding as often as you can to get the milk out. Massage, use warm compresses to ease the discomfort. 40 mins is a long time to pump on one side.

What kind of pump are you using?

Massage worked for me!

Yeah I would do 20 mins max for pumping

@Liz good luck momma, remember to breastfeed between pump sessions to decrease your chances of clogged ducts which can cause an engorgement and those are painful. Decrease pumping sessions so the milk doesn’t build up behind your glands

Thank you Good to know 40 mins maybe too long on one side. I’m using the Elvie pump which you press the button, wear in your bra and it does it for you

Thank you all So much better responses than google

Try a hot shower & hand expressing just until you feel relief. I got them a lot, even just occasionally pumping, so now I’m afraid to pump at all!

Aw thats rubbish @Sasha what pump do you use?

I’ve done the hot compress for 4 hours n that’s helped a little The cold one hasn’t done anything 😒

I just had mastitis! Make sure you take care of yourself and monitor your own temperatures. If you begin to get fevers you need antibiotics ASAP. I had warm showers and massaged the lumps, it hurts but it’s the only way to break them down. I exclusively fed off that breast and pumped on the other. Now I’m rid of it, it’s definitely worth still keeping the massage going every shower, just to minimise the risk of getting another!

Ah no way I was worried it’s that I have had a temp the last few nights tbh n then after feeding I go freezing cold

Thank you for the tips

Take Panadol every 4-6 hours and get to your doctor asap

Sounds like blocked duct to me. I had the same. Started feeling unwell with it and had to be put on antibiotics. Keep expressing and breastfeeding from that breast

I use a massage gun on my lumps the vibration helps break it up but after a while the vibration also makes it numb lol

Oh wow where did you get the massage gun @Ginger Lee

Thank you guys Will take some pain killers now

@Liz if you are having fevers and chills it has likely progressed to mastitis, you need to go see a doctor right away if that is the case. In the future, stay away from heat as it only inflames the ducts more. Use ice packs to bring down inflammation, gentle breast massage, nurse/pump as normal (no extra pumping sessions) and hand express milk to relief discomfort. If you pump or nurse more than usual that is signaling your body to make more milk which is what the problem is. Take NSAIDs for the pain and inflammation. You should see a doctor as soon as possible. If you get anymore flu like symptoms don't wait, mastitis can get serious very quickly

Thank you @Frances I will do! Good to know on the heat one - gutted cause I found this one more comfortable

@Liz heat can be used intermittently for comfort but to reduce the swelling ice is needed. You can use heat right before you do the breastfeeding massage to help move the clog, but afterwards you should ice the breast to reduce inflammation

Thank you @Frances that’s really good to know 👍❤️
