Breast Feeding - producing enough?

Baby girl is 1 week old today and we are solely breastfeeding. I’ve had one day when my boobs were hard and sore with milk and then since then they seem to have deflated and completely soft. I have been hand expressing too but not much is coming out. Baby is happy and a good weight but just not sure if I am producing enough or when I should bring in formula? How much milk should I be producing for a 1 week old?

As long as baby is gaining weight I wouldn’t worry too much. I believe that your breast milk changes as baby feeds to contain what baby needs to keep growing so it can be fattier etc if needs be. If baby wasn’t putting weight on then I’d mention to your midwife or HV

The HV will only be concerned if there is no weight gain. They will always ask about wet/dirty nappies too so be ready to report on that. You wouldn't need to jump to formula just yet if there was no weight gain, you could hand pump or start using a Haaka to catch your let down and feed the baby those as top ups. My baby was down 10.3% from birth weight in the first week as this is how we managed to get it back up. We have continued with pumping so my other half can do bedtime feed with bottle. She is now 21 days old so is taking around 90-120ml per feed but at 1 week I only had 10-25ml extra to feed her as top ups and she gained quickly.

That’s normal when your milk first comes in your boobs can become engorged but they do settle down pretty quickly I’ve only gone up one bra size and I’m feeding my toddler and baby and my boobs have gone back to being soft and squishy now after 2-3 days of them being very full and heavy. As long as baby is gaining weight every thing is fine xxx
