What is Liquid IV?

First off, what even is Liquid IV?

So, it’s a form of electrolyte powder, which has been growing in popularity over recent years.

Although the name may suggest it’s delivered intravenously, it’s actually a drink you can buy yourself — so, super handy for hydrating fast.

And ‘Liquid IV’ is actually the name of the popular brand, rather than the name for a type of process.

The company bases its products on a notion they call Cellular Transport Technology (CTT) (think of it like an expedited water delivery system in your body), which they claim is more efficient at hydrating than water alone.

There’s a wealth of different flavors to choose from (raspberry, melon, pear, grapefruit… all the fruity goodness 🤤), set to tantalize your tastebuds whilst hydrating you, too.

It’s also packed full of 5 essential vitamins — B3, B5, B6, B12, and Vitamin C. 🧡

Simply, pour the powder into a glass of water (around 16oz), stir around, et voilà — hydration station.

The importance of hydration in pregnancy 💦

So, just why is hydration that much more important when you’re pregnant?

Well, it’s not just about dodging dehydration… (although, that is, of course, incredibly important).

But, keeping up with your water intake can actually help along crucial pregnancy processes, like the creation of the placenta, and the amniotic sac.

It could also help to keep irritating pregnancy symptoms at bay, like such as UTIs or constipation.

And, that’s without even considering how pregnancy could actually induce dehydration, by it’s switch up of hormones and fun symptoms to keep you on your toes. 🫠

Sweat, vomit, diarrhea, frequent urination… the lot — all of it can cause dehydration.

And dehydration has been linked to pregnancy complications, such as lowered amniotic fluid levels, which can lead to problems with fetal development, Braxton Hicks contractions, UTIs, and preterm labor.

So, staying on top of your water intake, and your hydration in general, is really important for you and bump.

Is Liquid IV safe to drink during pregnancy?

So, according to Liquid IV, it’s best to chat with your doctor about it before you start drinking it.

This is because everyone’s different, and everyone’s pregnancies are different.

So, they can’t recommend a blanket ‘all pregnant women can drink this’ approach, as we just don’t know what’s going on in every mamas-to-be’s pregnancy journey.

But, because staying hydrated is so important, especially when battling sickness and nausea, your doctor may well give you the green light.

If your pregnancy allows for it, it could provide you with a whole bunch of benefits for you and your bump.

And those nutrients and hydration are so essential for you both as, without them, the body fails to perform to the most optimum levels for growing a baby.

So, in short — it could be, but not without checking in with the doc first.

Does Liquid IV help with nausea?

Ahh, nausea.

As a pregnant woman, you may have become all too accustomed to the phrase nausea, and allll its meanings. 🙃

So, could taking Liquid IV help with that?

Well, since nausea can make you sweat, vomit, and have diarrhea, all of this can contribute to dehydration, which is a big no-no in pregnancy.

So, Liquid IV could help to alleviate the symptoms of nausea, but in terms of it making you generally feel less nauseous, there’s little research out there to suggest that.

Again, check it over with your doc to see if it might be something to help you battle your nausea during pregnancy!

Will IV fluids help increase amniotic fluid?

As mentioned, keeping hydrated is important for making sure your amniotic fluid levels are optimal.

So, will drinking IV fluids help with this?

Although not a lot of research has been done on this, the little that has does suggest that it’d likely help with rehydrating your body.

But low amniotic fluid (also called oligohydramnios) is a serious condition where the amount of amniotic fluid is less than what’s expected for the baby’s gestational age (how far along you are in your pregnancy).

There’s no treatment that can completely correct this condition.

So, it’s really up to your doctor to advise whether drinking IV fluids when you’re pregnant is safe for you and your pregnancy, or whether alternative treatment methods are preferable.

Are electrolyte drinks safe during pregnancy?

Well, Liquid IV is an electrolyte drink, so the same logic would apply to all electrolyte drinks… so, it depends.

It’s really up to your doctor to decide whether it’s safe for you and bump during your pregnancy journey.

But, in theory, the rehydration aspect of electrolyte drinks (and the benefits the drinks themselves can provide you, as they’re packed full of nutrients), could be really helpful for you and baby.

But different types of electrolyte drinks are suitable for different things — for example, some are designed for athletes or sportspeople, and some have solely rehydration in mind.

Make sure you are always checking the ingredients on the back because some products contain high amounts of caffeine, which isn’t safe while pregnant.

So, get in touch with your doc to clarify which — if any — electrolyte drinks are right for you and baby.

Is Drip Drop safe for pregnancy?

Drip Drop say yep!

They say electrolyte drinks, such as Drip Drop, can safely ease dehydration whilst you’re pregnant.

But, again, let’s get the doc to clear this over, first, before you start taking anything during your pregnancy.

So, to conclude — you should have a chat with your doctor before drinking Liquid IV when you’re pregnant.

They’ll be able to advise you on what’s best for you and baby.
