The 411 on maternity leave

Different countries have different rules around maternity leave.

If you live in the United States, The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) may provide you with twelve weeks of unpaid maternity leave in a year, where your job is protected for that time.

To qualify for this leave, you need to meet certain criteria, such as:

  • Work for a public agency, school, or company with 50 employees or more.
  • Work for them for twelve months or more, and at least 1,250 hours over the past twelve months.
To help you navigate this part of the process, head here for details on when to tell your work you’re pregnant.

Do you put an out-of-office on for maternity leave?

That’s entirely up to you. For many industries and positions, it makes a lot of sense.

In a client-facing job where you’ll be gone for a few months, it’s good to keep everyone in the loop.

But even if this is not the case for you, the right message is a great way to keep all your colleagues up to date.

Sure, it’s about being professional, but it goes further than that.

Having an effective out-of-the-office message means you’re more likely to be given the space and time you need to navigate this awesome chapter in your life.

How do I tell my clients I am on maternity leave?

When you’re self-employed, maternity leave comes with its own set of challenges.

The best thing to do is be upfront and realistic about how much time you think you’ll need.

You may want to send out a letter to clients and collaborators before you go on leave that includes when you’ll be back and who to contact while you’re away.

It’s also a good idea to let them know if you’ll be checking emails if they do need to reach out.

If you’re uncertain of your plans, you also have the option to leave an out-of-office message with no return date (template below).

And here’s the clincher for self-employed workers — it’s totally up to you whether you let clients know the reason for your leave.

You may want to say you’re having a baby, but you don’t have to.

You can say that you’re leaving for medical reasons or simply that you won’t be around for a period of time.

It’s your call.

Has anyone else had issues with their friends that aren't pregnant or have kids?

I have a friend at work and we've become really close over the years. But ever since I become pregnant she just doesn't understand anything I'm going through which is fine except for the fact that the past few days I have been exhausted physically and socially. We have been helping another friend out for about a month now and we've had to keep him entertained as he's going through a rough time right now and it's drained me socially . my friend at work is frustrated because I'm not talking a lot and I'm exhausted and she doesn't understand why and I'm just curious if anybody else has had issues with friends that are not going to the same thing or have gone through the same thing as you connecting with you because she's literally mad at me. She stopped talking to me at work today and I just don't understand what to do.

STD rates and body count

Saw an interesting video and I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts on this topic!

So std rates are at an all time high as we all know. Do you think the mindset that body count doesn’t matter has contributed to the significant increase of STDs and HIV?

Secondly if someone says that body count doesn’t matter do you believe they are less likely to practice safe sex compared to people who believe in more traditional values?

I can’t put all the combinations in the poll so feel free to comment just yes/no answers

(If you’re going to reply please keep your responses respectful and polite.)

If your partner got a prostitute pregnant and then abandoned the child/ran away, what would be your response? Read…

So you were not in a relationship at the time or were about to be in a relationship, he gets the prostitute pregnant.
It’s her fault for not taking their morning after pill.
He tells her straight up that he’s not going to be involved and that she should terminate it.
She says that she won’t terminate and she hopes that he does stick around

So she deliberately gets pregnant, basically traps him

What would be your reaction?
he’s response is:
“She trapped me and it’s her fault for not taking the pill”
