Hands up who had a finger shoved up their bum after they gave birth…. Hands up who was given a full explanation of why it was about to be done, and was asked if it was ok first??

Yup your midwife may want to check for tears after you give birth, and yes sometimes that involved a finger up your anus… HOWEVER… it is NOT necessary at every birth, and it should NEVER be done without first explaining why and asking for your consent! Doing it without those 2 things amounts to assault, and can be at best extremely uncomfortable and embarrassing, at worst, traumatic.

There’s this misconception that once you give birth, all dignity is left at the door, and that is simply not true! Respectful and informative care should be afforded to every single birthing person. Submitting to procedures because you’re told you have to, or with no explanation, is never ok!
