Nappy creams, lotions, oils - what to buy? Confused, help!

What does everyone use? I’m a bit confused about the difference between the different oils, lotions and creams and why they are all necessary? And wipes vs cotton wool? I’m trying to keep things as minimal and natural as possible so the fewer products the better. (If anyone has any brand suggestions for natural products too, that’d be great!)

I use nappy cream and body balm from neals yard remedies. But even just coconut oil (just the plain one suitable for eating) works too to keep their skin nice and soft! I use the nappy cream which has beeswax to prevent any nappy rash

@Anna Rita Thanks for your reply. what is the difference between those two creams (i.e. what do you use each of them for)? I’m expecting my first baby in May and am completely clueless about all this stuff! Also, do you use any products like a lotion or wipe to clean poo off when changing? I know some people just use soap and water but wondering how practical that is to do that every time…

We’ve only ever used Water Wipes, they are expensive but often on offer. We initially used cotton wool and water to wash our son’s hands, eyes, belly button etc when he was a newborn but it didn’t really work for the nappy area especially the first méconium poo which is too sticky! For washing body and hair in the bath we just used water and a flannel or a baby konjac sponge for the first few weeks, then we used (and still use) Dr Bronners Baby Castille Liquid Soap. We’ve rarely had to use nappy cream but do have some cocoa butter balm from Handmade Naturals which is lovely, I also use it to moisturise his skin if needed. I used it on my bump too and didn’t get any stretch marks! If you aren’t using cloth nappies I’d recommend Kit & Kin as they are as eco friendly and natural as a disposable nappy can be.

Thank you, @Jessica this is really helpful!

Have you looked at any of the tropic little Rory range? Organic freshly made cruelty free products?

I use Balmonds Salvation Balm for anything

Sorry - sent that too early! I use that for anything on my skin and it is recommended for babies too. I plan to use that as a kind of all in one balm for everything. Including nappy rash! They also have a lovely shampoo and body wash suitable for babies which I already use as shampoo (I have eczema). recommend checking them out and reading the reviews. 100% natural https://balmonds.co.uk/products/skin-salvation https://balmonds.co.uk/pages/baby-child

Weleda does a lovely baby range x

Lotions ans creams aren’t necessary, your baby’s skin is so delicate and dosnt actually need them we’re just told they do. If your baby has dry skin maybe try some organic coconut oil or breastmilk. My babies 6 months and I’ve never used anything that’s not those two things on her and her skins perfect. We use water wipes because they are 99.9% water. If your wanting to use oils and lotions and things like that, get the YUKO app, it scans products and tell you how good they are and if there’s anything harmful.
