Am I doing this wrong?

Am I starving my baby? Ok so I’ll admit I’ll have the odd day when I forget to feed my baby a pouch of food during the day and most days we get up too late to even give him breakfast. So the odd day he’ll have one meal of food which is of course pouch. My mother keeps telling me I need to feed him food because he’ll be starving? Now he’s 8 months next week and this whole weaning thing is driving me crazy. Yea I’ll admit I’m quite a lazy Mam some days and others I will give him every meal of the day. So idk, am I a shit person? Am I a bad Mam?…

I started out with purées when weaning my LB then moved onto lumpy or mashed foods before moving on to BLW when he was around 8/9 months. If you are worried about choking there is nothing wrong with this method. You could even try a mix of both to see what works for you & your little one best. If you have a blender then I would suggest batch making some of your own purées and freezing to make it more convenient for you. You can get ice cube like trays for the freezer that will give you the correct portion size per ‘meal’. One of my LBs favs was sweet potato & broccoli and also apple & pear purée. You could maybe do porridge or weetabix in the am as it’s easy & fast to prepare. Then offer a purée in the afternoon. Joe Wicks - Wean in 15 has great recipes and info that will take you from purées to solid meals (6months - 12+ months), also as mentioned the Solid Start app for BLW & a great Instagram to follow is zaynesplate. I hope this helps and good luck with it all x

Firstly, your not a shit person or a bad mum! I would say however to make your life easier in the long run, it would be good to try to set a routine with feeding bubs so that he has the skillset & interest in food needed to eat well once he turns 1 and food becomes his main source of nutrition. As long as he is having all his milk each day he won’t be starving at all.

I absolutely did this accidentally until about 10 months where she’s like solid three meals, snacks and now at 11 months we are trying to phase out more milk (like we just dropped the morning bottle and I feed her a muffin). At 8 months my kid was a good eater but milk was still the preference. If I forgot a lunch, she would absolutely just take more milk. Don’t worry, you’re not starving your baby!

@Taymar not exactly. It’s a learning process, you can’t expect babies to barely be given any solids and then aged 1 suddenly eat 3 meals of table food a day. It all takes time and practise, thats one of the reasons you begin introducing at 6 months.

@Taymar I think everyone has their heart in the right place trying to be helpful so that she can make some progress, because she expressed some need for help. At least I know I added what I did to give her a good place for more information, as well as many others here. It's not like babies wake up on their first birthday and suddenly are excellent eaters for 3 meals and 2 snacks a day, it's something to work towards gradually, both skills the baby learns and our own comfortability and confidence. Yes, it's partially for fun so they can get used to the sensory aspect and routine of eating, and less about the calories, vitamins, nutrients, protein, and fat content at first. But those things become extremely important once they're off formula or breastmilk.
