Advice

Hello my lb is nearly a week old my midwife told me he’s lost weight since birth, I’ve been breastfeeding and doing everything I can he seems to want feeding every 3 hours, I’ve tried feeding him more often but he just doesn’t want it! It’s made me feel so guilty and horrible and like a bad mum, I just don’t know what todo. I’m also in so much pain on my nipples that it’s so painful when he latches on, I think one of my nipples is blistered I just don’t know what todo anymore 😭

Sorry to hear you’re having a bad time. As a second time mum and breast feeder, it is hard at the start but should get better. Have they checked your latch as should not be painful? Also if it hurts you could use shields while you heal. It’s normal for babies to lose weight after birth, especially if breastfeeding. X

My little boy was born 6lbs9 but a week later was down to 5lbs7 (he was in the NICU and we hadn’t fully established breast feeding). Just over a week later and he was up to 6lbs13 ☺️ Honestly it’s so normal to lose weight to begin with and once it all clicks he’ll start putting it back on quickly! Definitely speak to your health visitor though about latching because it shouldn’t hurt and definitely shouldn’t be getting blisters! Also remember if it gets too much and your overwhelmed then giving formula top ups is absolutely fine! Pumping and giving your milk in bottles is fine! Or even moving to formula is absolutely fine. Be kind to yourself because breastfeeding really is tough. Make sure your looking after yourself as well as your beautiful boy 🤍

Ask to see a breastfeeding consultant to see if they can help u to Improves the latch Try nipple shields and use a good nipple cream and pads that don't stick..

It is normal for babies to lose weight. Did you midwife seem concerned about the amount that was lost? I would also recommend getting nipple cream. I struggled with breastfeeding and I thought it was the latch but I just had really sensitive nipples so used cream even when breastfeeding and this helped a lot

Mine was the same. Was feeding every three hours and have now added too ups. He was doing fine and then dropped again (currently being tested to see if he has a cows milk intolerance 🙈). I would ge them to check to make sure baby is attaching correctly or request for further help.

Same for me too, I used nipple sheilds as was to the point of bleeding at the end of the 1st week. Baby lost, Gained then lost again so I topped up with some expressed and some formula and ditched the shields after nipples healed. But I did this slowly (still used them at night time as was easier for latching and some times in the day) 4 weeks now and we are 1lb above birth weight and gaining nicely with no shields or formula/expressed top ups. Cause of the constant night time feeding I do express and give her a bottle every other day just for a little break and to know she’s having a decent and if we go out anywhere I’m giving expressed bottle which means I know she’s having a decent feed. Hang in there it’s hard to start with but baby will gain, I gave formula to avoid having to go to hospital as midwife gets concerned once they drop 10% birth weight c

My daughter is 3 weeks old now but at birth she was 7lbs and went down in the first week to 6.6lbs they wasn’t concerned Midwife’s all said it’s normal for baby’s to lose weight in the first week as when born they have alot of swelling as long as by week 2/3 they are putting the weight back on x
