Dairy free diet for baby

Hi everyone! My 14 month old has eczema pretty bad and it’s only getting worse. We’ve seen the GP countless times who just keeps prescribing steroid creams which aren’t working. I’ve always thought from him having severe colic as a newborn that he might have a cows milk allergy but no one agreed with me including doctors they just said it’s all normal. Anyway his eczema is getting worse and tends to be better in the morning than at night which makes me think it’s something he’s eating in the day. I’ve recently (this weekend) changed his bottles from cows milk to oat milk and it seems to have helped, still not got rid of it but it certainly isn’t as red/angry as it was. I think I’m going to try and completely take him off dairy for a week or two just to see if it clears it up… but I have no idea where to start! I know it sounds daft but I’ve never had to look out for dairy. Can I buy lactose free stuff or does that still have dairy in? Is lactose different to dairy? I feel really clueless 😂 so like will lactose free cheese still have dairy in it? Anyone who has any tips or can advise, I’d really appreciate it!! Thank you so much xx

I am dairy free myself and I believe that I don’t think they can have lactose I just have everything dairy free most supermarkets will have sections that are just free from products it takes a while to get used to but it does get easier with knowing what to have.

Lactose is the sugar in dairy. So lactose free products will still contain cows milk protein. Also don’t replace dairy with lots of soy products as the proteins are really similar and that’s usually the second thing you cut out if there still reacting. Replace with oat and or coconut products. Mostly it’s just cooking from scratch and reading labels. Pretty easy to get a margarine dairy free. Oatly barista is recommended for oat milk as it’s high fat and contains iodine but maybe read some labels. I think alpro do an oat one too. There is a good chance he won’t take to vegan cheese straight away it’s an acquired taste lol but the vegan applewood is the only one my boy will eat. Also there is lots of good instagrams on dairy allergy info / recipes. The dairy free mum just realised a new ebook. Sr nutrition as great recipes/ food info

Aww bless him! May well be! May be easier to go with vegan foods for a little while as milk is in a lot of foods you wouldn’t even realise! I know this would typically avoid all animal products but it will guarantee no dairy or eggs ☺️ things like oat milk is great and can be used in all your sauces, porridge, smoothies etc.. if UK based head to the free from section ☺️ lactose free just means the sugar has been removed, which isn’t the same as dairy free (even something that is labelled as dairy free may contain eggs!) it’s a minefield - that’s why I suggest vegan products as this won’t contain any dairy, eggs, honey, gelatine (crushed cow bones) etc etc . flora dairy free butter . Soy / oat / coconut yoghurt . vegan cheese (cathedral city) . Diary free garlic spreads Look out on things like breads, biscuits, soups, salad dressing.. even some medications, even QUORN brand contains a lot of egg! Best to read the labels but I hope this helps a bit 🤍

Some ideas of snacks that won’t contain milk (or any animal products) Perkier salted caramel and cacao bars Bourbons Co op/Morrisons donuts Bournville Morrisons own ice-cream Jus Rol pastries! Skittles Love hearts Vegan drumstick bars Refreshers Toasted wholemeal pittas with butter Biscoff spread Crumpets Nature stores chocolate spread Soya yogurts Mr Kipling jam tarts Asda's vegan cupcakes BBQ bugles Vegan whippy cream Vegan marshmallows Cadbury's stir into hot milk choc powder Maryland giant cookies (the ones in a tray, red packet) Starburst Tesco's vegan flapjack (free from) Popcorn Smoothies Ice lollies Vegan ice-cream and buy some cones Make a biscoff cheesecake Make cupcakes Bombay mix Dip fruit in melted chocolate Make smores Gu cheesecakes Mug cake

Also Tesco's and Asda both sell vegan cheesecake in the freezer Aldi ready to eat sausage rolls, falafels, bhajis Vegan naan bread Alpro custard and fruit Asda's free from rocky roads (check for the no gelatine ones) and millionaire shortbread Tesco's free from giant choc buttons Party rings Vegan jelly

I’d definitely see an allergen specialist before doing anything yourself, milk is a very nutritious food and taking it out of their diet at a young age can cause them to have sensitivity to it later if they don’t actually have it now.

@Grace as long as they’re having a varied diet they will be getting plenty of nutrients. Babies after 1 can have any kind of milk, plenty of nutrients from oat / soya etc
