Any preferences or recommendations between LIJ (Katz’s Women’s Hospital) vs Queens Hospital Center?

Just took the virtual tour that LIJ offers and was underwhelmed to put it gently by the state of the rooms and care. Has anyone’s given birth at Queens Hospital Center or LIJ that can share their experience? TIA!

Oh where did you take that? I heard Katz was one of the top ones???

I gave birth in LIJ and it was great

@Andrea yes it is i love it and i will go back

Yes I just gave birth at Katz women's hospital the labor and delivery was great the maternity ward was good as well although some of the nurses had an attitude with me which I didn't appreciate but overall it was good

@Andrea I called in and signed up. They give 1 per month. The recovery rooms on the slides looked like *ish lol

@Sherline I’m glad to hear! Do you feel comfortable sharing more?

@sugran Thank you!!! Haha I totally see that being their vibes When I initially called about a maternity tour, the woman let me know that the in person tours didn’t work for them so they offer the 1x month virtual with slides.

My bad. I am giving birth at Katz North Shore University Hospital. I had previously asked about tours and they told me they weren’t hosting them because of COVID but no one mentioned virtual. Will have to look into that.

I gave birth at LIJ. the pre care team was amazing, after I was admitted and moved to labour, the staff changed and so did the attitudes. They gave me wrong medication, a nurse broke my water without letting me know because they were pushing for a c section. And then the nurses in post partum care didn’t attend to me the way they attended to the older patients. They also treated us different since we were the only black people there… it was a bad experience for us. I had gas all 4 days I was recovering and they would drag their feet when I asked for tea or water.

@Alanna OMG. so sorry to hear you had that experience!

I gave birth a LIJ Katz and loved everything about my experience. My L&D team explained everything and allowed me to make the best decisions for myself and my child. I would recommend anyone to give birth there. Rooms were solo, my family (my child, husband and I) were treated with care and the PCAs hooked me up before I left (took my overnight bag and filled it with pampers and formula).

@Evelyn that’s awesome!

I don’t have first hand experience with Katz, but I do know some younger moms that gave birth there and I was told that it’s very racist. So unless you have someone with you to advocate for you then I would recommend Queens Hospital Center. Either way do your research. I had a doula and birth plan in writing so that if anything went wrong they would have to explain why they deviated from what I had in writing. It’s your birth so you have to do what you think is best for you.

I gave birth @ LIJ Katz it was amazing the best care there is private room and the food and care was awesome

I gave birth at LIJ and did not experience any hint of racism 🤷🏽‍♀️ I was in labor for 35+ hours and every one was great. The only complaint was from my husband saying the couch was too hard, but they brought in a recline for us after we asked. The food was great, they brought in snacks for us, the nurses were nice, and we were checked in on often.

I gave birth there as well and had a good experience. They have a recently renovated wing in addition to the older rooms. I ended up in the older side and was fine. I genuinely love my doctor so that probably makes a lot of difference. Nurses were nice and helpful, but I would say choose formula and breast feeding on the intake forms because I chose only breast feeding and it seemed to put some of the nurses in a rock and a hard place when I was having trouble and wanted formula.

Absolutely no racism on my end either

@Maiza thanks for the tip!!

LIJ is incredibly highly rated but I had a terrible and traumatic induction there on February 1, and am currently filing a grievance. Among other things, they never admitted me to a labor and delivery room and kept me in a tiny recovery room with no bathroom or labor equipment or room to walk for ~16 hours until I was literally crowning, they didn't get me my requested epidural, and they did no cervical checks for over 10 hours during which I progressed from 0.5 cm to 9.5 cm and ready to push

@Jackie oh wow I'm sorry to hear that I was also there from January 31st till February 3rd it was also a bit traumatic for me as well as my daughter suffered from shoulder dystocia and chorimonitis as well I was in labor for 30 hours everyone in labor and delivery was great unfortunately once I got to the maternity ward that's when the nurses had attitudes

@Jackie was the tiny room you're referring to in triage?

@Arielle no it wasn't triage. I was in triage from 10:45 pm to 1:00 am. At 1 am they made the decision to admit me and begin induction of labor due to pre-eclampsia. However they said they were reserving L&D rooms for women in "active labor" so they put me in the PACU. This is the post c section recovery area, where you go after your c section waiting for anesthesia to wear off. The triage room actually did have a bathroom, the PACU did not and I had to go to the bathroom in the hallway. When they finally admitted me to L&D at the start of pushing, I had to transfer to a different bed because the bed I was in was not equipped for pushing (no rails or anything to grab onto)

@Arielle I was in that PACU room from 1 am to 4:40 pm. My induction started at 4 am. At 440 I was fully dilated, fully effaced, fully engaged, and felt the need to push. At that point they finally believed that I was actually in active labor and needed a room

@sugran I'm sorry to hear that, I actually had a good experience in maternity/ postpartum unit, but I filed a complaint against the labor and delivery unit

Avoid Katz unless you’re ok with lots of medical intervention. They let my induction last 3 days all to end in a csection because they realized too late that my baby was too big to pass.

I think it must depend a little on who your OB is. I know mine sent us to the hospital and was repeatedly calling to check on us until she was there.

I’m so sorry to all who had rough experiences for their delivery.

Anyone have Dr. Jee Shim? I loved her….her office is at Kew Gardens E/F train stop.

I gave birth there twice , recently to my 12 day old daughter. L&D staff was great but didn’t like the nurse name Yang from mommy and baby unit. She was giving me an attitude after I was concerned of how my baby was not latching well. She made me feel horrible and I confronted her about it. She changed her tone right after. Now that I read the above comments, she might have judgements about me and my partner since we are Hispanic and look young.
