“Mama you see bird” is really great! My boy (22 months) is saying lots of words. However most of them he is just pronouncing the beginning of the word. For example “C” for cat. “Mi” for milk “tee” for teeth. And so on. I wonder if any of you can relate to that. He is starting to put words together which is super exciting. Just now he put his stuffed dog on my head and said, “dog on mama head.”

My son was speech delayed at a year and a half so he went to speech therapy for a year (and music therapy to augment speech). He says 4-7 word sentences as many as, "Mommy, sit down in chair next to me." Speech therapist said by 3 years old that saying 3-5 word phrases is normal. So sounds like your son is on track!

Both of my sons had delayed speech. My oldest (9) and his brother (2) were far behind their peers. My 9 year old didn’t speak at all until he was 3 and now he doesn’t stop talking and is actually above average in his vocabulary and reading scores for his age. My 2 year old only says about 50 words but engages in parallel play with children his age, shows ability to understand me, and knows sign language. Talk to your pediatrician about maybe doing speech therapy. My youngest went and it’s how he and I learned most of the sign language we know. I think every child just develops at their own pace and I wouldn’t stress yourself out about it.
