deli meat fear

OK, so I’m eight weeks three days today, and i know i shouldnt have, but i have been craving a sub for weeks. I caved last night and had an Italian sub, unheated, from a local sub shop. It has salami, pepperoni, and capicola. it was only a 6 inch, but now I am not feeling the greatest. I don’t have a fever or muscle aches, which are two of the symptoms of listeria- but I am having softer bowel movements today, and diarrhea IS a symptoms of listeria, I’ve also had clammy hands all day. I’m nervous to go to the ER and sound hysterical, but I also don’t wanna sit by and not do anything if I jeopardized my baby. any tips? recommendations? support? this is my first pregnancy and i really don’t want to think that i did something to harm my baby.

I'm going to wager this is more anxiety than Listeria. I think you're fine.

@Tricia thank you, my husband just helped me too, like i said no other ‘symptoms’ i’m just going about my day and keep track of my body :) and i agree it’s probably more anxiety than anything but it never hurts to get more input from others who may have gone through something similar

I'm a PA. Void of any other symptom, I am confident you're fine. You can have heated deli meat, BTW.

Just dont do it again.. I know is hard... I love deli meat and it was the toughest thing to not eat it.

Hopefully everything goes well for you. The anxiety in me would have me running to the doctor. It doesn't hurt to be sure.

I feel like diarreah is also a symptom of Italian subs, or is that just a me thing? 😅 Don't beat yourself up to hard!

@Elise definitely not a you thing hun, my husband helped me realize it happens almost every time i get one 😅

@R I S S A i’m considering going to the ER for an impromptu ultrasound and blood testing just to ease my mind but haven’t decided for sure yet, thank you for the good wishes 🥰

@Alejandra trust and believe i won’t be doing it again unless heated THOROUGHLY and even then it’s debatable 😅

Mama you’re fine, if you had listeria, you would know and you would be miserable. The deli meat risk was started in the 80’s and was much more serious and risky then. It is much safer to eat today but still considered something you shouldn’t do just to be safe. This risk is extremely low.

@Kaitlyn thank you name twin! the sad part? i work in a deli so i know it’s typically pretty safe i’m just being extra paranoid because we didn’t think we could conceive after 2.5 years of trying and now we have- no more lunch meat for this mama!!

As long as it is HEATED. You are ok but you gotta make sure you eat it while it's hot

My OB told me as long as it’s heated up enough to kill the bacteria it’s safe

Sweetie, I think you’re fine. Think of women in the 60’s who drank and smoked throughout their entire pregnancy.
