Housing

Hi all! I’m a single mum and currently living with my parents, however I want to move out and don’t know what I’m entitled to help wise as I’m currently out of work due to Maternity leave I got let go from my previous job when I was pregnant, because I was pregnant so have been unable to get maternity allowance. My LG is nearly 8months old and want to get back up onto my feet and live in my own place. Picture for interaction

You can apply via under one roof it's social housing, it will match you with a home based on your criteria. Off the top of my head you'd probably be offer a one bedroom flat, apartment or possibly a two bed but the waiting list for those is long due to the the high demand. You can apply for universal credit also for support. You can do a calculation online to give you an idea what you'd be entitled too. Alternatively you could go private, that way you'd be able to pick your home but it can be very costly renting privately and sometimes leas secure than a social housing option.

Stay home as long as possible if they help watch your child. Unfortunately a lot of people don't have that luxury

You should never be let go from a job because you’re pregnant it’s against the law so if that’s the case you could raise a grievance or even tribunal against them as you’re missing out on statutory maternity pay https://workingfamilies.org.uk/articles/maternity-discrimination-a-guide-to-your-rights/

So they fired you because you were pregnant?!

You can apply for a property through under one roof however the waiting list is very long. I was being made homeless by my mum due to lack of space and it took me 10 months to be offered a 2 bedroom flat and I was a high priority due to being threatened with homelessness x

@Jessica 🤍 unfortunately yes

@Jay I can’t. As there is no room in my family home, and I don’t get on with my family.

@Alison I wasn’t entitled to anything bc they weren’t paying me through the books it was cash in hand

@Elle girl that’s so ILLEGAL!!!!! GET YO MONEY & CALL HR.

I’m sorry you’re going through this Elle. I would contact ACAS for advice. Do you have any evidence you worked there? Contract? Letters? Uniform? Either way I would suggest it’s worth a discussion. Working cash in hand is a risky one because you’re not always covered by the same employment rights however pregnancy discrimination is against the law and you might be able to argue something if you have any evidence. In terms of housing as a single parent with a new baby you’ll be classed as high priority through your local council…few people have also mentioned Under One Roof which I’ve heard good things about in the St Helens/Warrington area x

@Alison thank you so much I’ve just applied on Under 1 roof so hopefully bit of luck will come my way x

Under one roof are awful...or have been for me..been on the waiting list for over 3 years...I was attacked by a neighbor...still didn't move me up...mental health effected...still didn't move me up...having a baby...still hasn't moved me up the list...I understand there's a housing crisis in the UK atm with not enough housing for people but they haven't lifted a finger to help me and told me even expecting a baby that I won't be moved up the list..🫠👎🏻🤦🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️

Yep I’m trying with under one roof and not getting anywhere luckily I’m at my boyfriends atm but I’m not on the tenancy agreement and I’m still renting my place but not living there because it’s a house of multiple occupancy and I’d probably get kicked out but there’s no where to put all my stuff it’s all a mess and under one roof are sh*t
