Good or bad attachment?

Our 1 year old has separation anxiety. She’s showing a preference (mainly for me, mum) but she also does not let extended family members hold her. My husband says he’s embarrassed because she doesn’t go to or let family hold her and he thinks she doesn’t have good attachment because of this. These are extended family members we are talking about, mainly our aunts, uncles and cousins that she does not see often. Does this mean she had bad attachment or is it just part of her development? Most things I’ve read say it’s normal but he’s adamant it’s not. TIA for your help!

It's 100% normal. My little girl is the same. Sometimes she doesn't even want to go to my parents or my sister who she sees weekly. It's just a phase & nothing to do with bad attachment.

It annoys me when people say such things about babies. Of course they are going to be attached to their primary care giver, you are their safe space after all. My little boy is the same, even though he stays with my parents twice a week while I’m at work. He still attaches on to me when I’m there but once I leave he’s fine with them.

It's totally normal, if you look up the strange situation by Mary ainsworth you can see that young children with healthy attachments behave like this. When they don't respond this way, it's actually a sign that they've got poor quality/ negative attachments to their main caregivers, it might interest him to do a bit of reading around attachment theory if he is concerned

Thank you so much ladies! I wasn’t worried at all but got really frustrated today when he made these comments. I’ll share more evidence based stuff with him for sure!

Completely normal. It actually means you have a really strong healthy attachment as you are her safe place. It's a primal instinct to not trust strangers for safety reasons. She'll grow out if it. It's important to trust our babies instincts, respond to them & encourage them to share how they feel. X

Completely normal. My little boy won’t even go to his gran at the minute who he knows and see all the time!
