Tongue-tie and clogged milk ducts

My little guy is 6 weeks. At his first pediatrician visit, I was told he is tongue-tied but it was ‘mild’ and didn’t need a procedure. Weeks later I have come to realize that this is what’s causing breastfeeding problems. My milk ducts are clogged and it’s really painful now. I’m looking for advice on how to unclog milk ducts and get milk letting down again. Also, is anyone else experiencing tongue-tie? What are you planning to do? Procedure or leave it alone?

I have no experience with tongue tie. But do some research on sunflower lecithin. I use the brand from legendairy milk. Use warm compression on your breast and pump often.

If you also have the Hakka hand pump I suggest putting 1 - 2 tablespoons epsom salt on with warm water and soaking you breast for 10-15 mins. I know your pain!

My son had a tongue tie but it was severe. What you need is a second opinion from a pediatric dentist. Make an appointment as soon as possible. You are looking for a cold laser release procedure. There’s less scarring. Make an appointment as soon as you can. My son’s release was a feeding game changer.

Hello! I'm from Canada but I wanted to chime in. Our daughter had a tongue and lip tie which were causing my breastfeeding issues i.e. cracked nipples, pain, and her not getting enough milk. We got them released by laser treatment which took less than a minute to be done by a pediatric dentist. I then had to do her mouth exercises 3-4 times a day for a month and took her to a pediatric chiropractor once a week for about a month. In the end she went from 3kg to about 5kg in 2 months, so she gained about 4 pounds. As for the clogged ducts, place a warm face cloth on your breast, then pull your breast away from your chest and massage your breasts (one at a time) in a circular motion clockwise 10 times then counter clockwise 10 times then apply a lymphatic massage to each. You may have to look that last part up online. Your breasts should start leaking milk after that. Good luck!

Same thing happened here, tongue and lip tied. We got the release done his first week of life, but it takes a while for them to learn to use those muscles, here we are at week 5 and he still can't hold his tongue up for long periods so his latch doesn't seal well and he tires easily. When my milk cane I got super engorged and even got mastitis from the bad latch we were experiencing. He is mainly bottle fed and constantly have to adjust his latch for it to seal and him to get better. Just started to practice having him back at the breast. Honestly, this has been the hardest part. I have worked with a lactation consultant throughout these weeks, I have been on 2 different types of antibiotics and constantly wanna give up. I would recommend seeing a LC to help you navigate and a pediatric dentist.

Hello, my daughter (1 month) has a mild tongue tie. However, it doesn't affect her breastfeeding. It was discovered when she was born, and we have an appointment with the pediatric ENT doctor tomorrow (3.30) to see what they want to do. I was told by the pediatrician when she was born that hers would require a small snip to fix. If you're in the DC Area I can give you the name of our doctor.

My daughter also has a mild tongue and lip tie that the LC thought doesn’t need to be fixed but I’m looking into it anyways. It’s just so goddamn expensive.

Thank you all for the advice!! I am going to look into Pediatric Dentist. It looks like an ENT could do it too. Im glad to hear it’s not a big or painful procedure.

@Julia does insurance cover it? How much are they quoting if I may ask?

Sunflower lecithin has saved me! It works to unclog the ducts and it has been a game changer for me. I also suspect it increased my supply but I'm not totally sure about that. You can get it overnight from Amazon, I use the Legendairy Milk brand

My second had a tounge tie the procedure helped and use warm like a warm rag or lanisoh makes thera-pads they help

@Keesha Most ENTs today will not do the procedure on tongue-tie because it is not really considered a medical pathology anymore. You may have better luck with a dentist who is motivated to perform the procedure because they can bill more for it

Pump and haka

I have no experience with a tongue tied baby but for the clogged duct, I had one just a few days ago. I noticed I had started getting a hard lump in my left breast and pumping wasn't helping. I tried to get baby to get it and my bf too but they couldn't. So I took a hot shower and massaged it. Kinda tmi but I also tried to suck it out because my nipple can reach my mouth. And after I did I noticed the tiniest little white thing trying to come out but no matter how hard I tried it wouldn't. I git frustrated enough that I actually tried to pop it like a pimple. And surprisingly it worked lol. After, milk was spraying out from all the build up lmao.

@Keesha skip the ENT. My son had two procedures. The first release was done by an ENT. His release grew back- so we had to have a second release. The second release (the laser release) performed by the dentist worked. Everything was much better about 4 weeks after the release.

My 19 month old has a tongue tie currently. He is getting surgery done under general anesthesia to clip his tongue tie and we will be hoping to start speech therapy soon after. But he has a severe tongue tie. He wasn’t able to latch when breast feeding so he was formula feed (after also finding out that my supply barely came in after 3 months of trying to pump). Now it’s affected his speech he says mama and dada and he tried to form words but because of how big the tongue tie is it holds him back from being able to actually say the words.

And yes, an ent doctor is doing the surgery.

Both my daughter and son had tongue tie, and we got it snipped. My son is 7 weeks old and we have an appointment today with a dentist to evaluate whether he’ll need a laser frenectomy. My lactation consultant explained the snipping isn’t always as effective as the laser, and he may also have a lip tie. The ties can also cause future issues with speech and oral development. My breastfeeding struggles have been a nightmare. I hope this helps him.

@Alyssa Thanks! I just ordered one from Target. Should be here within the hour 🤞🏾🙏🏾

@Mekenzie I wish I had your luck lol 😂 unfortunately when I hand express only a few drops come out and when I pump I only get like 1/2 oz.

@ Jen Thank you!!! I didn’t even know it could come back until I posted on here.

@Keesha my lactation consultant had warned me that a scissor release via the ENT has a high reverse rate but my pediatrician disagreed. But once my nipples started to hurt like the fire of a thousand suns and my supply dropped, I made a pediatric dentist appointment for the second release. My son was tongue, lip and cheek tied (not fun on the old nips) The major key was the stretches after his release. They helped keep his frenulums from growing back.

@Keesha My daughter had hers done today, and she seems fine. She only cried because I had to hold her head during the procedure. She she latched afterward and nursed just fine
