GBS Positive - How’d you handle?

Just over 36 weeks and tested positive for Group B strep. I understand this isn’t much to worry about (as it impacts 25% of pregnant women), but I’m bummed I’ll have to have antibiotics during labor. Did you find with the IV administration, you weren’t able to be as mobile? Or is the process relatively quick? I’m hoping to labor naturally, if possible, and therefore don’t want to be chained to the bed. Also, I already take probiotics (and will up my dose that week). Should I also bring some for baby, and try to get those onto him straight away?

I just went through this so I know how you feel! I gave birth at a birth center though and they just put a saline locked IV in so there was no running fluids so I wasn’t attached to anything until it was time for the dose of antibiotic. I was taking probiotics prior and am continuing them after as well. I’m also taking other gut support supplements and trying to eat fairly clean to help my gut heal. (I tend to be very sensitive to antibiotics) As far as baby goes, I do have him on a good newborn probiotic.

Btw you can refuse antibiotics. They wouldn't let me with my first, but he came too fast to administer 2 doses like required. For my 2nd I went with a midwife and declined. It is definitely not needed and have had 0 complications with either child.

I refused antibiotics when I was GBS positive. I opted to have baby monitored after birth and would treat then. I didn’t want baby’s gut micro biome to be destroyed before birth.

Just remember to be firm in your desires and advocate for yourself. If they have you sign anything while you are in labor about refusing write signed under duress.

I was GBS positive and I refused the antibiotics, just do your own research on the potential risks and they won’t be able to scare you if they tell you them in the hospital. No problems here without the antibiotics!

My midwife had me put cloves of garlic in my vagina every day to try to balance everything out in there. It’s a really old practice but a natural one that we were comfortable with. I also doubled my probiotic intake every day. When it came time for birth, I refused antibiotics and did a rinse with chlorhexidine every hour during labor

I didn’t do antibiotics I labored mostly at home and didn’t get to the hospital till I was 9 cm they kept asking me if I was GBS positive and I acted like I couldn’t hear them 🤷🏽‍♀️
