Weight gain

My baby boy will be five weeks this Sunday, we keep having to go to the dr for weight checks because he’s not gaining the appropriate amount of weight the dr thinks he should be gaining (1oz a day) he is a healthy formula fed baby, who eats at least every 2-3 hours. These last two weeks he gained 9oz instead of 14. He doesnt spit up or have diarrhea- & the dr doesn’t think it’s a medical issue just wants us to start adding in an extra scoop of formula to up his calories. Is anyone else experiencing anything similar with weight gain? Talked to a couple other moms and we think it’s stupid, & that if he’s healthy and gaining weight then it shouldn’t be a big deal because every baby is different. Thoughts? Opinions?

@Chelsey yeah, my mom says I was under 6lb at birth, myself. & hubby was preemie. I think it's not a big deal, but i appreciate them being cautious & watchful

@Mallory i might consider finding a new pediatrician. Not every mom has a natural sense about children but I feel like you do so trust yourself and find a doctor that’s on the same page as you. My boyfriend and I are both under 5’5” so they know our kids are short and skinny 😂 every kid is different and “average” just doesn’t make sense at their age.

If you’re not comfortable with your dr opinion, change the doctor!

@Renee he eats 2-4oz every 2-3 hours so I don’t think there’s anything wrong with him, he sucks bottles down! Haha But I will double check!

last month

@Mallory right!!! I was in the opposite boat, he was measuring 4 weeks ahead my entire pregnancy and they were worried about him being so big haha and now he’s like 9lbs 6oz and there’s nothing wrong so I don’t get what the big deal is!

@Flor sounds about the same, which is why I don’t understand why it’s a big deal! Everyone’s different, so not sure why our dr is so stuck on him gaining the same amount as every other baby 🤔

My baby lost 9% of his weight at birth and almost had to go to NICU for a feeding tube but then he gained 3 pounds and now he's a little chubby

I’m going through the same with my baby girl. Last 2 weeks she gained 9 oz instead of 14 oz. She is finally over birth weight thankfully but it took more than usual. Pediatrician told us she’s still on her curve and she’s healthy and okay 👍 we got a scale to weigh her at home and call if something happens or her weight drops. She even told us to go 4 hours without waking her up to feed at night! She’s breastfed and sometimes at night my husband feeds her with bottles of breast milk. She is just skinny (she’s tall) and her stomach is small. Pediatrician told us to not worry about it because she’s fine (I was very scared and sad). She eats in demand during the day and she shows signs of being full and has a lot of wet diapers. Some babies are just smaller I think!

Have you checked to see if he has a lip or a tongue tie? My stink gained 7.5oz in the first 2 weeks of his life and then week 3&4 he only gained 3.5 oz. So I did my research and saw he had a lip tongue, and took him to a pediatric dentist and sure enough it was severe enough to fix it. And now he’s gained 2.5lbs in the last 2 weeks since we got it fixed! He’s 7 weeks old. It prevented him from getting the right suction!

@Chelsey my girl was born at 6lb 3.6oz, & they made a big deal about her losing 10% before discharge. They made a big deal from week 28 of pregnancy on that she was small in the abdomen & weighing low. Girlfriend is 4wks now, we have another weight check on Wed. But she's healthy, eating, & growing. She's just small. It's been super frustrating to me that it's such a big deal when she passed all tests & nothing is wrong. I had gastric bypass in 7/2021 & lost 140lb pre baby. They were initially concerned she wasn't getting enough nutrition, but that's obviously no longer the case.

@Mrs. M thank you ☺️

@Caitlyn good luck!! I just find it annoying, when he is a healthy baby but just growing a little slower than what he’s “supposed” to

last month

@Chelsey yeah he was born at 8 lbs 11 oz - and his discharge weight was 8lbs 1oz, and then gained 6oz the first week, 6 more the second week, and then 9oz in the last two weeks 🤷🏼‍♀️ he’s deff have consistency

last month

@Alyssa this is exactly our thought - the first two dr visits he gained 6oz instead of 7, so it doesn’t seem like that big of a deal, & he deff isn’t starved we feed him 2-4oz every 2-3 hours so I would rather not force feed him just cause he’s a little slower 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’m going though the same thing my daughter birth weight was 7 lbs and 1 and her discharge weight was 6lbs and 15 and her pediatrician is worried that she not gaining the enough weight and isn’t drinking enough and i switched from breast feeding to formula and her last appointment she weighed 6 lbs and 14.5 and her next appointment is on the 31st and I’m hoping she’s gaining enough weight by then

It’s not so much about the amount of weight but if there is consistent weight gain. My baby was born at 6lbs 3oz and at his three month check today he was 12lbs. That puts him in the 13% or something like that but it’s consistent growth so that’s good.

In my opinion if they are healthy and are gaining weight, I wouldn’t do anything different. Babies are different and if it’s not harming baby and he’s not losing any weight just because it’s not the amount they think he should be gaining I wouldn’t change anything 🤷🏼‍♀️ (that’s just my opinion though)

Some babies are just small. You could have him assessed for an oral tie by a Peds Dentist. It can cause slow weight gain. But as long as baby is gaining and not losing, I think the extra food and all is unnecessary. My niece was 32lbs at 4 years old, when she was a baby she was slow at gaining weight too and the doctors wanted my friend to basically over feed her daughter. Just go with your mom gut honestly and I’d possibly look into changing doctors.

Try doing the extra scoop of formula, my daughter is 5 weeks today and she had to stay in the nicu for 26 days cuz she wasn’t gaining as much, but when they did the extra scoop of formula, she started gaining and she be spitting up every now then.

I am experiencing the same thing. I was told he will be on a hypoallergenic formula now to keep down his milk and hopefully help with his tummy issues
