Use of niplette

So I had my health visitor round and she recommended using a niplette.(I have inverted nipples) I am 36 +3 weeks. This is to give me the best chance at breast feeding once baby arrives! I woke up during the night and there was a lot of watery yellow liquid in them, is this colostrum? I haven’t been harvesting but if it is I could.

Hi, it definitely sounds like colostrum yes! My midwife advised me to wait until 37 weeks to express

Hey, I have an inverted nipple too and was told you don’t need anything as the baby is latching to the areola not the nipple itself and to just position myself laying down whenever I can when feeding for ease.

I have inverted nipples and I wondered if it would be a problem but my boobs have been leaking loads! I haven't been doing colostrum harvesting but the other day I tried hand expressing to see what happened and a good amount came out! So yeah, I don't think it matters!

All I seem to read online is that it will be impossible, I really feel like I have failed if I can’t! I think there is soo much pressure that breast is best! It’s stressing me out 🫣 I got the niplette but I seem to be getting a lot of colostrum so it’s then breaking the seal. She said she’d start straight away to get the best results but it’s also not very comfortable 😩

I really just would see how you get on. I know a number of people who’ve breast fed with inverted nipples and were fine. Not sure why your midwife is pushing interventions when you haven’t even tried.

It was more the health visitor that advised the niplette but shes also a midwife and works in the hospital where I’m due to give birth xx

I expressed from about 21 weeks in my first pregnancy- the work it takes to express is not the same as a bit of leakage into a nipplette so don’t worry about that. I also have breastfed throughout my second pregnancy. If that’s fine, and sex is fine, and braxton hicks is fine, I really don’t understand why people are still being told to not express? Anyways, nipplettes are great! If you find your nipples are quite flat, I highly recommend buying a couple nipple shields just incase! They were the only way I could breast feed when my little one arrived. At about 3/4 months he started latching by himself finally! There’s a tendon behind your nipple and stretching it is key to a good latch for babies Breastfeeding is a hard road but expressing during pregnancy was the key to me getting a good supply up and working on my inverted nipples.

I feel like if anyone is discouraging you because of your inverted nipples they can do a long walk into the sea 😂 your baby isn't here yet and it's totally NOT helpful to make you think it's not gonna happen. As I say I am a proud inverted nipple owner and I don't think there is any indication thusfar that feeding will be a problem. As others say, the baby needs to latch on wide to the area, areola and all, so having a bit of an inny nipple really shouldn't affect things, especially if you are already leaking colostrum. I bought some nipple shields on the advice of other people (who may or may not have inverted nips) who said that it helped at first if things got a bit achey. So I've got them on the back burner just in case. But honestly, don't stress about it! Once your baby is here you'll find out what works for you and even if you don't end up breastfeeding, or it doesn't go to plan straight away, your baby will be fed in some other way and that's all that matters.
