Feel like an awful mum - baby watching too much TV

I’ve started to feel like such an awful mum recently. Baby is 12 weeks and I just don’t know what to do with her during her wake windows. She’ll feed for 10 mins or so and has a nappy change when she wakes up. Then I usually put her on her play mat/do tummy time/interact with her for 5/10 mins until she gets grumpy. She then sits in her swing chair for 20 mins or longer and just watches the tv and she loves it! I know I really shouldn’t be letting her watch this much tv and I feel bad that I just leave her to it until she gets grumpy again and is then fed and falls asleep. How do I interact with her and use less tv? She seems to much prefer watching tv on her own than playing or interacting with me :(

Do you have a garden? I used to just walk around the house and tell my little girl what everything was and we'd do in the garden. She loved looking at all the flowers! I also had foil blankets and a disco bulb and we used to do sensory playtime on the landing as it was the smallest place to cast all the colours on the walls. I used to sit her in her bouncer and practice her tracking objects by moving them around slowly for her to follow. I think the might start holding stuff by then so put things in her hands to practice that too

Reading is a nice thing to do. You can read baby books for her to look at the colours, but sometimes I just read my own book from my kindle! They say babies just like the rhymtic sound of your voice when reading. But I wouldn't beat yourself up over the TV. You will probably find as she gets older and you can do more with her, its easier to play with her. I don't think you're necessarily on a slippery slope with it x

Oh yea. I also learnt lots of different songs to sing to her. They still come in handy now if she gets upset in the car and we can't get out to sort her out.

Go easy on yourself! I had a COVID baby and my god it was hard to find ways to fill the days at home without leaning on the TV for entertainment. I cant say it's done any harm either, my 2.5yo's speech and imagination is amazing. There's some more interactive TV shows like the baby club on BBC iPlayer which I found were good and makes you feel less guilty for using tech! But aside from that, I liked sticking baby in the sling for long walks. It's great as you both get some fresh air, they get some one on one time with you, you can chat about what you see, and you get some exercise in too 👍

Don’t beat yourself up I find myself doing this too when he’s awake for a long window and nothing else peaks his interest. He’s not in the slightest interested in books and tummy time he’ll do for 5 mins max on the floor. The only other thing he’ll do for a reasonably long period is lay on his play mat with his nursery rhymes on but I only do that with him upstairs when I’m trying to get ready. If I’m needing to do something in the day then he’ll get some dancing fruit on the tv and he loves it. He dances away to the music so I see it as still learning. Hopefully in the next few weeks he’ll be ready to go in his bouncer and that will an alternative option x

@Nicky I’ll definitely be trying all of these tomorrow, thankyou!

@Lubna Yes! Wheels on the bus. I used to sing this and do the moments with her legs... Round and round, swish, swish, swish
