Do u think it might be the milk you are on or it can be cause when my baby boy had his injection the other week they said he might have a stomach upset and I have gave him calpol when he needs it but me only on a night time if helps him sleep better
I’m not sure if it’s the milk, he has been on this milk since birth and this started around 4/5 weeks ago, he only had his jabs yesterday x
Sounds like reflux …
Doesn’t sound like CMPA to me x
@justyna I have thought about reflux but he doesn’t spit up or vomit at all, he has gained weight perfectly and has no problems at all being on his back! Could it still be reflux? X
Thanks @Jacq I’ve never thought it’s CMPA but at this point I’m just second guessing myself and every thing x
Silent reflux? My baby boy does exactly everything uve said. He's 11 weeks now and his constant grunting has reduced and he isn't as fussy. But it peaked between 6 and 8 weeks. He is still unsettled at night after his 4-5am feed. That's because wind can build up over time and he hasn't moved about in his first sleep cycle. I'm not sure what to do about this either. I currently give him a combination of breastfeeding, sma comfort formula and also the ready made bottles of sma pro. This currently seems to reduce his wind. But he has silent reflux as I can see him swallow down milk when it's coming up (cos he'll make a face of disgust). I keep him upright for 20-30 min after feeds.
I’m not sure if it is reflux because I don’t see the milk coming back up and him swallowing as you described but I just don’t know! It’s not like it with every bottle though and sometimes he takes a bottle with no problems at all, that’s the confusing thing. But last few days he seems to be getting worse when taking the bottle and seeming in discomfort combined with the straining and grunting 😭 it’s awful for us to see, never mind for our little ones ☹️
Yea I know 😞 maybe it will just get better with time as they learn to cope with these things. Last week my boy had an upset tumny and mucus in his poo. I spoke to my GP wondering if it was cmpa (as it would explain a lot ) but she said it doesn't appear so as he's been on cows milk since the beginning and the diarrhea and mucus was recent (bcos I experimented with another formula). She's asked me to continue what I was doing for 2 weeks and then review.
I really am hoping so, I don’t want to wish time away at all as time already goes too fast but I can’t wait for him not to struggle any more 😔 Oh love him! At least they are doing a 2 week review with you! I am thinking about making an appt on Monday to discuss everything with the GP x
My baby is the exact same! Even down to the times she goes to sleep😂 and is so much worse after the 4/5am bottle and there’s not much I can really do to settle her even though she’s asleep, I’ve seen 2 GPS now and both have said it’s common and completely normal as they are just learning to use their bowels and the digestion slows down over night. She said it’s really common but not something people talk about enough so you feel like you’re the only one. After speaking to some of my friends who’ve had baby’s they all said their baby done something similar and grew out of it around 12 weeks!
@Melissa omg it’s such a relief to know someone else’s baby is the exact same! Not that your baby has it too as I know it’s awful watching them, I just mean that’s it’s not just us and normal as you say! Is your baby the same with a bottle sometimes too?! (If they’re bottle fed). I did ask about it in his 6 week check up and the dr said the same then, that’s hes just learning and I know it’s only been a few weeks but it feels like forever now! I can’t wait for him to master how to use his Bowles and for digestion system to mature as it’s really starting to bother me now especially when he gets frustrated 😭 bless our little ones!! Hopefully it’s not long until they outgrow it 🤞🏻xx
We're 12 weeks on Monday 🤞🏼
This sounds really normal, it’s just babies learning to use their digestive system and as has been said above, it’s worst at 4/5am as they have been lying down for a long time so everything slows down. It doesn’t sound like cmpa/reflux or silent reflux, if it was silent reflux he would be screaming rather than just uncomfortable and he doesn’t have any symptoms of these conditions. It will get a lot better by around 12 weeks, sounds like he’s doing great and sleeping really well. Try not to worry

@Chrissie honestly I’ve been thinking what you’ve said for the last few weeks, but the last day or so started to worry incase I’d missed something and it was something else entirely. So it’s reassuring to hear that what I’ve been thinking originally is most likely right! So I guess it’s just a waiting game then, bless him. Thank you x
My boy has exactly the same symptoms as you described and he has got silent reflux - his grunting got better after omperazole. He gains weight too so it was difficult to get meds in the first place. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish between them straining and grunting for passing wind or for food coming up To their mouth. Just observe if you hear when feeding him if food is coming up to his throat. With silent reflux there is no spit ups. Is his nose blocked?
@justyna no not really, he has been slightly congested in the past but generally he is ok. I will give a mention about this to my GP. Thanks x
Congestion usually is a sign of silent reflux when it does not disappear. You can mention this to your gp but it is very unlikely they will do anything about it if he gains weight… I had to go back three times to get sth prescribed- but I have seen a massive improvement during feeds
Symptoms of silent reflux include: Irritability Trouble sleeping Choking Gagging Nasal congestion Arching the back while feeding Chronic coughing Refusing to eat Pauses in breathing (apnea) Noisy breathing or wheezing Hoarseness
My boy had almost all of these symptoms occasionally - not every day - now it is much better
The only symptoms my boy has on there really is slight nasal congestion now and then and arching of his back, but will keep all this in mind. Thanks!
We had the exact same with our boy, turns out it was infant dyschezia and it literally stopped the day he turned 3 months old. I was told all sorts by doctors and GPs but the only thing that helped him was time.
@Cleo thank you for the reassuring comment! He is 10 weeks today and it seems to be getting better slowly as sometimes he will just poo now, but definitely still has it as other times he’s the same as above. Fingers crossed it completely stops soon 🤞🏻
What’s the update on this? My LO is exactly the same except she is on gaviscon for silent reflux. Been on it for a week now and no improvement. Thanks 😊
@Jordan hi! My little one is completely fine now, poos every day and no straining at all! I think he was 14/15 weeks and he sundenly just learnt how to go. Now he has no problems at all! And he definitely didn’t have any other issues such as reflux, I know now it was 100% infant dyschezia! No tricks or tips unfortunately it was just a case of a matter of time, and waiting. Xx
My LO is fine too. Poops almost everyday and the day he doesn't he'll make up for it the next! He still strains a bit but not as much as before. It's far more easier for him to do now. His reflux has become way better. And we don't burp him all the time now. He usually gives me a sign when he needs to burp and I'll help him then.he does spit up while burping or sometimes randomly after an hour of a feed but it's not anything I'm worried about. He doesn't arch his back or have silent reflux anymore. Way more settled. We are on aptamil pepti 1 tho for cmpa, last 2 months. I do think that's made some difference too in his reflux and overall comfort.
We're also totally fine, 8 months old now and it feels like a very distant memory! I can't really believe how little is taught/explained about infant dyschezia as clearly it's more common than we think. Hope you get through it soon 🙏
Hi, I’m just jumping on here because I’m at my wits end 🤣 13 week old baby girl grunting and thrashing around from 4/5am. When did this roughly stop with you all? Xx
@Alana for me it literally stopped the day he turned 3 months old. It's like he just realised how to poop without all the grunting and straining!

@Cleo thank you!! She was 3 months on the 20th so hopefully she stops soon 😵💫😵💫😵💫 xx
@Alana Mine was between 3-4 months when he suddenly just learned how to go!! No problems at all since xx
Thank you xx
We burp him during his feeds, every oz or so and he’s pretty good at getting it up!
