One year old not pointing or waving

Google tells me autism and I’m starting to get nervous . Baby just turned one july 29th. I try not to compare but all my mommy friends have babies who are pointing waving and talking ! My baby claps and gives high fives . Raises his hands when he wants to be picked up He makes babbling noises and does mama and dada but doesn’t direct them towards me. I can say give mama a kiss and he’ll give me a kiss then say give dada a kiss and he’ll give me another kiss. Should I be worried ?? He also just started shaking his head side to side like he’s saying no but does it when he’s excited . But also does it for no if he doesn’t want something

I’d honestly ask your pediatrician if you’re really worried. It seems all babies do things at different stages…my nearly 13mo old doesn’t do some of the things that his (same age) friend does. Sometimes I’ve found myself starting to worry and then suddenly he adds a skill randomly!

Every baby develops differently. Google also told me I had cancer before which I didn’t.

I wouldn’t worry yet all, mine does not point or wave but claps and high fives and shakes his head. Mine is nearly 13 months now. He does so many other things already that I’m not concerned all.

I feel like that’s all normal! My daughter waves and points and says hi but also shakes her head no when excited and thinks everything is mama , I wouldnt worry too much about it all kids develop differently!

@Carolina my little one says mamamama at everything too!

My son is one and doesn’t do either! We still encourage waving with every hello and bye but he hasn’t picked it up yet! He says mama, dada, cat, and a does moo for animal sounds. He also says ya and puts his hands up when he wants to say no. Everyone is different, he doesn’t clap either but we also don’t really clap at home or have shown him how to tbh. I wouldn’t stress it much.

I have been a special ed teacher for mild, moderate and severe disabilities. I am a first time mom as well. While I acknowledge your concern about your child, it is also important to remember that our children progress at different rates. It is too early to determine if your child is showing signs of Autism. Continue providing activities that acknowledge the skills you want to see in him. We can sometimes over think things and that can impair our ability to see our child’s progress in a different light. Your son does more things that my daughter doesn’t, if that makes you feel better!

I don’t believe you have anything to worry about ❤️ Babies all decide to do different things at different times, it sounds like he’s on track with interaction and learning things like high fives so may just not be interested in the waving/pointing yet ☺️ Doesn’t sound like autism at all to me though!

My son will be 13 months next week. He just started pulling himself up but cannot get himself into a seated position, only army crawls and doesn’t walk. He doesn’t recognize his name, wave, clap, point, shake his head or say anything other than mamama, bababa and dadada. No intentional words. We had him evaluated by Early Intervention and he qualified for services in the area of communication/language only. We have a planning meeting tomorrow to discuss setting up therapy sessions for him. So I say go with your gut and if you think something is wrong, get him evaluated by Early Intervention. In NJ the evaluation was free and based on income we have to pay $7 per one hour session.

This is awesome Thankyou ! I’m in pa , he was good recognizing his name and then now it’s like he ignores me. But if I ask him if he wants a boobie he comes running over . So I know he hears me !

They say he recognizes his name at daycare, but apparently not when me, my husband or his grandparents say it

Do you need a referral from pediatrician for E.I ? He has an appointment sept 6 at pediatrician, but I would love to get an evaluation earlier

@Alicia does your son watch a lot of tv? The evaluators told us we let our son watch too much Cocomelon and that can cause language delay. They suggested Wigglea, Sesame Street or Barney

My girl turned 1 on July 6th and she doesn’t clap, point, and rarely “waves”. But she can high five! I don’t think you should be concerned though, he’s still within the normal range of learning things it seems🫶🏼

we actually have the tv on all day 🤦‍♀️ but he’s not in front of it , just kinda in the background it’s either blues clues or ms Rachel !

I wouldn’t worry because he does clap and shakes his head No. my LO is a week older than your son waves but doesn’t shake his head. Also he started crawling close to 11 months old, while most babies hit that milestone at 7-9 months old.

@Sophia he was very mobile he started crawling as soon as he hit 7 months and walking at 11 months , but just really lacking communication ! If he wants something he’ll just grunt and hold his breath 😧

I’ve learned google is a moms worst enemy 😅 I was worried about my son’s lack of communication and it told me it was an early sign of autism too. So of course I started to worry. My son was so focused on the physical aspects of development that I think communication just has been on the back burner. He claps when he feels like it. Doesn’t wave or high five. He says mama for everything and says dada. His babbling is increasing a lot so I know words will eventually come. It all just takes time and it’s totally up to the baby! Just keep practicing and he’ll get there 😄

Thankyou !!

My son turned 1 yr old on july 23rd, he just started pointing yesterday. Give it some time. Kids reach certain milestones in varying times.
