Are knit/crochet baby blankets practical?

I’m thinking of starting a baby blanket for my little one, due January. But I was wondering - will he use it? Most yarns aren’t easy to throw in the washing machine, and newborns aren’t supposed to sleep with blankets anyway. Should I knit him a blanket or put my time towards making something else? What was the most useful thing that you knit/crocheted for your LO? ❤️

@Heena that’s beautiful! What yarn did you use?

My little boy was born last September and had lots of knitted bits. We used them all over winter. They can sleep with blankets as long as theyre no higher then their armpits ☺️

It's the stylecraft bambino

My LO was born in Dec so we used the blanket that mom crocheted. Now I have a Habitation throw that I made, as it’s a lighter gauge. We definitely use them lots. Plus it’s a nice memory of your first few years together

My almost 4 year old still likes to cuddle the blanket I made him as a baby, so they get the use out of it. It's machine washable yarn and dries fairly quickly on the line. I also made a cardi but it was quickly outgrown and not that practical

I don't knit but I got a homemade one from someone else from vinted and I love it! It has an Elmer the elephant pattern

Do it! No one made my little anything which was very sad, I’m useless at knitting and crocheting, but still have the blankets I was made as a baby. I used cellular blankets with mine and would have used wool, and now she’s a bit bigger would definitely use them when it’s colder. Knitting cardigans are useful too..

I’m knitting a cardigan for baby, I’d like to knit a few cardies/jumpers by the time baby’s due (November) but I’m a pretty slow knitter so I’m not sure how realistic that is. I think even if baby doesn’t use the blanket it’ll still be a lovely thing to have for when they’re older.
