Colostrum collecting advice

I started collecting today but only managed a few drops out of 1 boob. Do I bother trying to scoop onto a spoon or wait till more comes out? Also how many times a day should I be trying?

I find evening easier personally. The first time I tried I got like 0.01ml. I can now get 2ml across both boobs. So it definitely takes a while to build up. I have been doing in for a week. I would try again tomorrow, make sure you are hydrated, your boobs are warm and you massage them really well before trying to get it out. I’m only trying once a day as my boobs do feel tender afterwards.

@Lisa would you suggest not syringing until I'm getting a good amount to avoid wasting them? Or can I collect some and refrigerate and add to it?

@Rebecca If you can collect, I would say syringe it as it’s all worth keeping! You can only keep a syringe in the fridge for 24 hours part full apparently before it must be put in the freezer.

@Lisa how long do you try for? I read online 5-10 mins per breast but I'm definitely doing more and feeling very tender the next day 😳

I started last week and began syringing what was coming out straight from my nipple. In my first attempt I only managed around 0.4 to 0.6 ml, my left boob hardly gave me anything. One week later I’m now having to express into a sterilised bottle and then syringe from there, I’ve managed 6ml tonight. I would suggest getting yourself warm and comfortable, playing some relaxing music, massage your boobs for 3-5 minutes and go from there x

Don’t worry if you only got a few drops. I’m only on day 4 and each day I’m getting more. First day I got like 2 drops and today I got a whole syringe in ten mins. I have been using a syringe straight on the boob and topping it up later in the day. You can refrigerate and top up for 24 hours, then you have to freeze it x

@Alisha yes I’ve been doing more too, I get abit carried away. Does anyone know if there’s an issue with doing longer than ten mins? I kind of get in the zone and forget the time X

@Raffi I don’t think there’s an issue. I get 3-4 syringes within an hour or more sometimes.

I have received leaflets from my midwife and on them it says you can express 2 to 3 times a day (both boobs) but it doesn't say anything about how long the sessions have to be. So j started yesterday and managed to get out 1ml in 24hrs, so I was very pleased with it.

@Alisha I probably spent about 40 minutes but I’m swapping from boob to boob. Massaging and heating them so I’m not like squeezing the whole time 😂 but they feel tender the next day and fuller! I also left it for one day to give them a break and then when I tried it was just flowing out!

Ngl, just did this for the first time and found it quite fun 😅 it’s wild what our bodies can do!

Day 2 of trying and managed 0.4ml from both boobs! Woohoo! It's working and noticed it balled up more than yesterday so hopefully as the days go on it'll be better. Also, does anyone else's babies move more when collecting? Little man was going crazy inside
