A little concerned..

Soooo. Im 37 weeks and 6 days, ill be 38 weeks tomorrow. I’m having concerns because i’m not even a centimeter dilated yet. My Ob told me this last Tuesday at my visit & I’m having a visit tomorrow so hopefully i dilated at least a little bit. But if i’m still not dilated at all would that be bad? Now I know this may sound stupid because usually first time mommas usually go full term (40 weeks) and have been dilated or at least more than a centimeter dilated. I think im just worried about passing my due date and not being dilated still? I think thats why im having some worries? Because i REALLY don’t want to be induced. Not that there’s anything wrong with that for the mommas who do/are getting induced its just not my preference for what i want for my baby & I know its also not my choice because my body has to be ready to have the baby when its ready but either way i dunno. I just need my worried eased i guess 😭.. Do any other mamas have this worry or is it just me?

I also know i have some time to dilate aswell but I’m just thinking too much I think. 😭

Literally the same. I’ll be 38 weeks tomorrow as well and on Friday I wasn’t dilated at all. Baby girl is measuring really big (94% tile and over 8lbs already) and they said if I make it to sept 30th and the ultra sound still has her growing at this rate they would discuss options of a c-section because the risk of shoulder dysplasia so I’m trying EVERYTHING possible to try to jump start labor if I can. She told me primrose oil and raspberry leaf tea and sex like everyone says but I don’t feel any different and I haven’t lost my mucus plug. I’m so with you. Wishing the both of us the best 💕

Some women don't dilate at all until labour begins.

I went from 0-10 in 6 hours on the day of delivery at 40+2 😊

It’s really normal to not be dilated yet. Dilation can happen in a matter of hours and you’ve still got a couple weeks to go.

At 37 weeks with my first I felt the same way but I went for a walk not to initiate labor (or maybe so 🤣) but the next night I woke up feeling like I had to poop and nothing came out then I realized the cramping was coming and going and that it was actually contractions , I went to the hospital and was 3 cm dilated. So you never know !

@Erin I’m so glad I’m not alone with these worries & my doctor told me im in the 46% tile at 6 pounds 😕 but I’ve continuously drank red raspberry leaf tea, i do yoga, exercise/go on walks, tmi: masturbate which jumpstarts contractions because i heard it helps with dilation, & ive tried perineal massages but i stopped because i didn’t like the way they felt. So i dunno what I’m doing wrong but i also wish both of us the best we got this🩵🩵🩵

@Maya ohhhhhh

@Sian oh wow!

@Janina yeah i kinda figured that I feel like im morally just scaring myself 😭..

@Mykah perineal massages are really uncomfortable but sooooo crucial for protecting your pelvic floor muscles and preventing tearing among preparing the area to expand and contract.

@Mykah definitely! Lots of moms don’t start dilating until labor is about to begin. But you can do lots of walking and stuff. I did. I dilated to a 10 in around 12 hours. I was only dilated 1 -2 cm until right before labor.

@sha thank you for this! I really needed to hear that😭🙏🏾🩵 I’m just gonna try to stay positive & hope I dilate

When I was 37 weeks I wasn’t dilated at all… I went in hospital to be induced at 40 weeks and was 1cm… a couple of days after being in hospital I was 2cm.. it wasn’t until they broke my waters for me that I dilated more. I wouldn’t worry

Dilation isn't something to worry about, some people dilate an inch a week and others go from 0 to 5 in a day, some women dont even start dilating until labor and then they dilate really fast. If everything else is healthy you should be able to go as long as baby feels comfortable in your belly. When they are ready to come out, your baby and your body will know what do to. Things you can do to help with the process is drink red rasberry leaf tea, eat dates, do some pelvic excerciese, prenatal yoga helps, sex/sperm really helps with dilation. You can also do nipple simulation which helps too. Your body knows what to do when it's time, aperently it's a longer process when you're a first time mom, just be patient and trust your body and your baby and let nature take its coarse. I'm a first time mom at 36 weeks and half a centimeter dilated and it can be stressful when you don't know what to expect, I did alot of research on natural birth and the birthing process and it really helps with confidence.

Try to relax! I had a sweep on my due date and wasn't dilated at all with either of my children. They came at 41+4 and 41+0. Perfectly within the expected timeframe of 38-42 weeks. 38 weeks would be quite early so don't stress! You could have almost a month left.

I went from 1cm dilated to holding my baby 3 hours later. Dilation doesn’t always occur before labour. Try not to worry yourself ❤️

I was 1cm dilated at my 41 week appointment. Then went into labour the next day, naturally. So I would not stress too much, stress makes it worse. I would also recommend looking at acupuncture with someone who specialises in women's health/fertility/labour, it can help prepare your body and bring on labour.

Please don’t worry! You can go from nothing to several centimetres once labour begins. It’s not an accurate measure of your progress, even during labour.

@Emma thank you so much for all of that information I’m definitely doing the raspberry leaf tea, the pelvic exercises/yoga & im doing sexual stuff solo i heard that works too. & ill try the nipple stimulation to see if that helps me out but yea it did stress me since im new to thjs & i really appreciate your input about it 🩵🩵

It's okay if you go past your duedate. You're good to go up to 42 wks without induction as long as your pregnancy is healthy. Keep in mind it's more common for ftm to go past their duedate. It's common to not be dilated yet. Some women don't dilate at all until labor has started. And even if you were dilated now, it wouldn't at all mean that you'd go into labor before you're due. Dilation before active labor honestly means nothing. You could be 3 centimeters for weeks or you could go from 0-10 in the span of 20 minutes.

I was 41 + 3 days and I ended up having an emergency c-section , got induced my body was refusing the hormones the doctors was giving me so I had the get rushed to theatre it was so scary but it was all worth it honestly

I wasn’t dilated at 39+3 on my induction day

Even after 24 hours of labour I was only dilated 6cm and I was almost 41 weeks. You aren’t doing anything wrong and need to relax! Baby will come when they are ready, you’re still two weeks from your due date and as other said you can go to 42 weeks as long as you and baby are coping well ☺️
