Silent reflux ruining our lives :(

My baby is 2 months old and has been having awful silent reflux. Initially for the first 3 weeks we were actually having comparatively amazing nights of sleep. Now it’s all come to an end with this SR- she is coughing and choking and gulping constantly daytime and night , and even when she finally settles to sleep she is crying out in pain in her sleep and it often wakes her up too - meaning no sleep for either of us or I can sit upright and stay awake to hold her and let her sleep. in the daytime it’s easier to keep her upright after feeds but that still means that I don’t get a single break to make food go to the toilet have a wash or do life admin etc I have tried seeing the GP and HV they’re not helping at all, I have requested allergy testing but they won’t do it I have seen an IBCLC twice and spoken to another one for a second opinion today finally found out she has a posterior tongue tie which is rated at a 6-7 (not very severe) and the report said that it isn’t affecting latch or feeding (as I know that latch can affect reflux also) I have tried taking her to an osteopath, have bought baby probiotics and some tummy calm reflux homeopathic medicine which is like a gentler gripe water without the E numbers . If anyone has any suggestions and advice please - we are all ears! I can’t stand seeing my LO in so much pain

@Zoe someone said the other day that having a reflux baby is like parenting on hard mode. People with normal newborns just don't get it. Reflux lady Aine Homer is on Instagram and has a book called the the reflux survival guide. I'm reading it at the moment and it's really interesting and helpful. Sending you lots of positive energy!

@Fahima I’m just breastfeeding although I’m not against combi but I’m afraid she might have CMPI which could be what’s causing it in which case will need a special formula

@Fahima bless you both that does sound traumatic for you both. The only trauma from my birth was a 40& hours labour and crap HCPs , also had an epidural but I’m not sure if that counts or not

@Adrianna thank you, it’s just destroying our happiness and wellness . Apart from that she used to be a really happy and chilled baby and now she’s not and it just doesn’t feel fair- all that I want is to help her and make her feel better

@Aimee thank you , I’m so sorry you went through that it’s awful isn’t it. I know I shouldn’t feel guilty to try the medicines so thanks for this it’s just so hard knowing the right thing to do but I can’t stand to see her suffering

@Fahima yes I’m the same I was prescribed the gaviscon but don’t want to give it to her

@Zoe I went to the GP and my GP did prescribe Gaviscon for him but I didn’t feel comfortable giving it, I can’t remember why now. I did try to combi feed him but Aptamil made him constipated and then I wanted to try Kendamil, however, my doctor advised against it and said to stick to exclusively breastfeeding. I have heard good things about Kendamil (if you are formula feeding then you could maybe try it and see if it settles his stomach)

Apparently reflux in newborns can be caused from birth trauma. My baby did have a traumatic birth because it was an emergency forceps delivery, where they literally yanked him out of me to save his life. He had the cord wrapped around his neck twice 😣

@Zoe they can’t really do much since the babies muscle that connects to the stomach (they controls the reflux) isn’t developed yet, so it all takes time. I know how terrible it is and I can’t imagine for you as a single parent.. they didn’t do allergy testing on my baby either, you just have to try out different foods and see how they react to e.g. avoiding all dairy etc… I’m here if you need support girl💖

We went through SR with mt daughter 21 months and now with my son 4 weeks and omeprazole is the into thing that worked. We tried everything - carobel, reflux milk, colic milk, gaviscon , holding upright, sleeping upright, dr browns bottles. You name it, we tried it. And in the end we had no choice but to try the medicine and it changed our lives immediately!

@Adrianna I’m a single parent with no help so it’s just ruining my life why don’t doctors do anything I really don’t want to stop breastfeeding have already asked them to allergy test and they won’t how did you get intolerance testing

@Fahima I can’t wait until 5 or 6 months :(

Also, I know right now being in the middle of it all it really sucks for you guys but IT WILL PASS. You will get your sleep. Your baby will get better. It just takes time sadly 😭😭😭

My son had the worst silent reflux. It got to the point where he couldn’t lay flat for more than one minute. We had to nap with him in the recliner and take shifts at night. It all lasted for 5 months. None of the doctors helped at all. Eventually we put his crib at an incline and they prescribed a medicine for him - but what really helped also was switching him to a hypoallergenic formula (elecare) because he was intolerant to soy and dairy and eventually I had to stop breastfeeding him cause it seemed like whatever I ate (which was bare minimum at the time) was so bad for h and hos reflux. I highly recommend seeing if your baby has intolerances to any food.

@Zoe totally understand how you feel! This is one of the reasons why I didn’t enjoy the newborn stage as I was constantly having to hold him upright and during the day he used to contact nap

I ended up holding my baby for about 15-20mins after feeding and then putting him downn on a low pillow (my Doctor suggested this) this helped him sleep without vomiting. The reflux ended after he started sitting up at 5.5 months.

@Ellen thanks for understanding it really is exhausting and feels so unfair that no one will listen (Gp / HV etc) I will check out the FB groups now

@Charlotte how do you administer it ? I breastfeed and never have time to pump as I literally can’t put her down :(

@Sarah I don’t use infacol , I have her on an incline wedge pillow and I’ve asked gp and HV for allergy testing referrals and they won’t it’s making me miserable trying to cut everything from my diet and I don’t even know if it’s that

@Natalija if you can ask that would be great thanks and I will also try to find some infants friend

This is super hard. We are going through the same thing even down to the tongue tie my LG is nearly 4 months now and I think I've had about 3 hours sleep a night since she was born. It's so hard and barely anyone understands, someone referred to it as a just a laundry problem the other day. They don't understand the sleepless nights and days of never being able to put your baby down it's exhausting. One thing that has helped me is the Facebook groups they are amazing for advice. Babies with reflux and silent reflux and the acid reflux babies support group. They are really helpful for venting and also getting tips from other mums who've been through it and out the other side.

My daughter now has baby gaviscon for silent reflux! It has helped sooooo much xx

As a mama who has a baby with a “mild tie” and medicated reflux I can honestly say it can still makes difference to divide the tie. The first feed afterwards was something else! I did have latch issues though so not sure if you do as you put “they said” rather than whether you’re experiencing any and they just decided it doesn’t sound bad enough.

Have you tried eliminating certain allergy common foods from your diet ? If you’re breast feeding that is. You could start with dairy, gluten, peanuts. There are 10 most common food allergies I believe you can google.

Tbh I’d look at getting the TT cut, you don’t know the impact it’s having (not truly) or will have in the future. GPs don’t do allergy testing anymore really, they’d rather do trial and error. Tummy time massively helped out reflux & silent reflux. Slings in the day. @cosleepy on Instagram has a guide on safe chest sleeping.

Hi Zoe, it is so hard to see your baby in pain and not finding ways to relieve her pain, I know a bit about it.. I really hope she grows out of it quick 🙏 I was using Infacol for my son, which helped for the gas but it turned out that after a while it was one of the sources of his reflux because of the orange aroma which has an acid pH, not great for reflux. So stopping it helped. Feeding him in upright position. Sleeping in an inclinated bed (which you're probably already doing). Everything to reduce gas as much as possible because when too much gas he would constrain and then regurgitate.. I also stopped dairy for the time I'd breastfeed him as he showed allergic symptoms... This has to be looked at by a pediatrician dietician, referred by GP or HV. If ever you're on formula, there are special ones that help with reflux or designed with cow milk allergy in mind. Don't give up, you know when something is not right, you're fighting for your little one, you're an amazing mum!

Zoe I'm so sorry, my good friend has been through this and it was a very dark and difficult time for them. I'll ask her what she did but rest assured it you're nearly there, it won't last much longer with or without intervention. 💓 infants friend was the only thing that helped her daughter. She used it religiously. You can also try baby Bowen... look up a video on YouTube. Both my babies slept more soundly after a few gentle releases. The one on the solar plexus would be a good one to try.

@Tamika yes she has cradle cap too she had baby acne at the start for a few days which only happened when I was baby wearing and her face got hot and sweaty, also she gets a lot of gas and I think her poop are mucousy but it’s hard to tell I have nothing to compare it to ? I asked the IBCLC today and she said they looked fine - but that was only from photos and not IRL - to me they look mucousy 🤷‍♀️

I’m so sorry you and your babe are going through this mama ❤️ Does she have any other symptoms? Cradle cap, “baby acne” or any skin rashes, gas, mucousy poops, etc. ?
