Baby sucking arm - help!

My 8 week old girl is almost constantly sucking her arm/hands. To start with I just thought it was a hunger cue - which it is sometimes. But it’s the second she wakes up, and even after feeding now. We put her in a sleeping bag instead of a swaddle last night as she was coming out of it so of course she had her arms free, and I got 3 hours sleep. Every time I put her down she was chewing her arms and awake again within 20 minutes. She took a couple of bottles and boob between 2-7am but was fighting it sometimes and really fussy. We are treating her for thrush at the moment - could that be it? Do we need to resort to a dummy? I can’t survive on 3 hours sleep 😪😪😪

it’s a pretty normal thing for babies to do for comfort and they are just figuring out their bodies! A dummy might help so worth a try. But if she’s not damaging the skin and is settled while doing it then I don’t see the problem. She will grow out of it and onto something else soon enough! 😂

Maybe Put her in sleeves with the little mittens attached. The ones that fold over. Then she won’t be able to pull her sleeve down, would that help? Is it very loud when she sucks on her hand/arm?

@Jill she had these on last night - she’s so wriggly they come undone and just sucks her sleeves anyway 🙈

She's a beauty! But chances are it's just her way of soothing herself or she just figuring out she has arms and hands.

@Jill she’s very loud and very awake - she doesn’t soothe herself with it - seems agitated?

@Tash she’s not settled - seems to get more agitated?

It is a sensory that most children who will grow up with ADHD have. She is just entertaining herself That just means she's going to be very active playful and funny

Really normal, mines the same. They're just discovering things!

Definitely try some dummies. But my little girl does this as well. She’s absolutely obsessed with having her hands or wrist in her mouth. It’s normal for this stage! They’re just figuring out their bodies :) x

She’s self soothing, if she keeps waking up you can resort to a dummy

@Jasma what do you mean? She’s going to have adhd because she sucks her arm? 😳

I would use a dummy xx

My little boy done this for a few weeks then grew out of it. He would end up giving himself little hickies on his arm. Like you I tried everything to stop him but they are determined little babas. She will grow out of it before you no it. And no it does not mean she is going to have ADHD. Too many people are quick to put a label on everything now. Xx

@Corrie oh that’s good to hear thank you! Yes a bit worrying to jump to labels at 8 weeks old!

Nah I work with kids who are adhd and raised 6 from infants not labeling im experienced

@Corrie Nothing at all is wrong with having AD HD, by the way. I just know by My personal experience, all 6 kids that I. Have raised that has done that. Has had AD HD as they got older. And I only am a mother of 2. But experience does not mean labeling. It just means you know the things that others may not.

Hunger. New babies eat every two hours sometimes more. When cluster feeding, yeah it can be constant. Hate to be the bad news bear but yep that's it, might as well get used to waking up all through the night, it's going to keep happening for at least another year!

Sometimes babies can’t differentiate between stomach pains from hunger or from gas. So they’ll act hungry when it’s really gas. Is she burping good after she eats? Maybe gas drops or gripe water.

Hunger hunger and hunger hon - my girl clicks at me and sucks her hands when she’s hungry and she’s always bloody hungry, I’ve found cow and gate hungry baby formula works well… at times but really every day is different!

@Kimberly she’s definitely not hungry 👍

@Alia she’s definitely not hungry - she does it straight after eating and after breastfeeding 👍

My little girl has been obsessed with her fist since she was almost 3 months old. She also wakes herself up trying to get it in her mouth and it’s not always hunger. The dr told me it’s completely normal for some babies. She mostly does it to sooth herself but also just because. Lol. We tried every dummy and she wasn’t interested at all. At just over 4 months she is getting better at getting it where she wants but I feel ya. It’s loud and annoying that they wake themselves but not much you can do really.

is worth knowing about neurodivergance as a possibility as there are some challenges of living in this world that can start long before diagnosis is possible that compensating for if/when you see them that are not going to do harm should your little one be neutotypical.

My little girl was obsessed with her fist for weeks. To the point she had sores on it from biting and sucking constantly. Now it’s her feet. It did change for her so I’m sure it will for yours as well. Ours also won’t take a dummy so we are stick with it.

Did you find out what it was? My little one is doing that almost all day and night. It’s like a self soothing thing but it’s so sad because she does it all the time. Super gassy baby doesn’t poop or burp well.
