Questions About Hypothyroidism

Hello! I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease at age 15, unfortunately had to get it destroyed via radioactive iodine at age 19. Since then, I’ve really struggled with trying to keep up with my health as I have a number of other physical and mental illnesses that affect me. I was not trying to get pregnant, but to my surprise it happened around early October. I didn’t find out until early/mid December. I had an appointment/checkup with my endocrinologist a few weeks before I conceived (late September) and I was very under active. He told me normal range for me should have been between 0.2-4.5 I believe, something like that. Mine read a 6.3 (over 6 for sure). Some crazy stuff happened and my thyroid hormones were taken and I won’t get into it but I went a week or two without taking any at all. I was on 137 dose btw! As soon as I could, I started taking my hormones again. When I found out I was pregnant I was honestly so shocked. I know thyroid hormones are important to the development of healthy babies. I’ve since talked to my endocrinologist and family doctor and I’m on a dose of 150. I’ve had an ultrasound and a few blood tests, but I know any little inconsistencies can really mess with the accuracy of the readings and it takes a few months of consistent consumption to get an accurate reading. I don’t believe I’ve missed any doses and I’ve been good with my medications since but I’m so worried about any lasting damage that could have been done. I’m so sorry if that was long.. My question is does anyone have experience or know anyone who’s been through this kind of thing? I know there are some things that can’t be detected during pregnancy but I have been told my baby is developing okay. My endocrinologist is not the most competent and that really scares me but thankfully my family doctor has my back and puts in a second opinion.I do plan to switch special and I’m waiting for a callback but it’s looking like I’ll have to deal with mine for the rest of my pregnancy. What are dangers exactly? Will my baby be healthy or have I messed up badly? I’ve heard that if you’re quick to correct your hormones you should be fine, but 2 weeks is a long time. I feel so sad thinking about it and any insight or support would be appreciated. Remember, my thyroid is completely gone. It’s so difficult finding any information on the topic and I just feel lost some days.

Hey there I have hyperthyroidism and had two boys within two years so I wasn’t on any medication while pregnant with both. Both of my sons were healthy. My first one was fine and 8 pounds. The only thing with my second son is that he was tiny and measuring behind so I had extra ultrasounds. I believe he was tiny because I had my two sons close so not enough time to heal and I wasn’t seeing an endo at the time. He was 6 pounds and came early around 37 weeks. Im no doctor but I’m sure everything will be alright ☺️🤍 I know our situations are different but kinda similar in a way. Good luck to you!

I have hypothyroidism (and Graves’ disease as well). I still can’t seem to find a happy medium with my medication I’m on 125mg a day (started in 2017). You should be ok as long as you can get in to see your doctor as soon as (not sure how easy it is as I’m in the UK) during both of my pregnancies I would see my doctor/endo about every 4 weeks to check my levels were ok there was quite a bit of tweaking during both pregnancies I was on a higher dose and then back down after I gave birth. I’d like to think that if they have said to you that baby is doing ok then that is true, my children have turned out ok - I am worried my little girl might end up having thyroid problems as it is quite common in my family but the checks they had when they were born didn’t find it then (hopefully she’ll be one of the lucky ones to not get it 🤦🏽‍♀️). Sorry not sure if any of this helps, if you’re worried just keep on at your doctor/endo they are there to help. Good luck with it all 🥰

@Kira Thank you so much ❤️ I feel a lot better after reading your response as well as taking time to seriously sit down with my Endo, family doctor and OBGYN LOL I pray my journey goes well and my boy comes out healthy Cheers x

@Sophie Thank you so much for sharing! My biggest concern was that I had to get my thyroid destroyed and was off medication (involuntarily) for about 2 or 3 weeks? The baby borrows mamas thyroid hormones so the thought of potentially obstructing the development of my baby honestly horrified me to no end. I still don’t even fully understand my body and go through tweaks pretty often after RAI.. and I got that done 7 years ago :/ I feel a lot more confident now. I was a WRECK when I posted that. Oh man. Stay healthy mama! And I hope your daughter doesn’t have to go through it 🤞🏽❤️
