C section (elective, UK)

Can anyone tell me, do the NHS perform elective c sections at 39 weeks or is it 40 weeks? This will be my 2nd baby (14 months apart) and my first was a emergency C-section

Mine was at 39+1 They like to do them between 38-39 I believe!

I was 39+5

If there is no medical need it will likely be in the 39th week. For some medical reasons they may perform it earlier

Mine was 39+1 also! I found out the date at 38+3 was literally given a few days notice of the date

I had mine at exactly 39 weeks, Its always in the 39th week if no health reasons but whenever they can fit you in within that week I think x

Mine is booked for 39 weeks

Thank you everyone! I’ve been trying to work out when to go on mat leave as I want at least a few weeks to prepare myself 😂

39 weeks! But if you want to stall it to 40 weeks or around the time of your original due date you can, you just need to request it

I’ve been told it will be between 39-40 weeks xx

My 1st was 39+5 , my second one was 40 weeks bang on x

39-40 weeks as standard unless mum or baby needs before 39 weeks x I had 38,38+2 and 37 weeks x

I had an elective c-section when I was 39+6 x

Around 39 weeks they do it

Mine was scheduled for 39+1 but she came a day earlier and surprised us

I was told 39 weeks by the hospital etc, finished work based on this and now I’m booked in the day before my due date 🙈

Mine was at 39+2

Mine was scheduled for 39 weeks+5

I've been told 39 weeks for mine as long as the diabetes don't appear 😅

I'm on my 4th c section they like to do them between 39 and 40 weeks that's what they told me today xx

i was told as he’s my first it won’t be until after 40 weeks

Hi. When are people being asked about this please? I’m 30 weeks this week and when I briefly mentioned this in a community MW appointment the discussion around a C was shut down. I’ll be 43 around due time and am seriously considering a C section.

@Aria Thomas can I ask you how each recovery has been? My Midwife said i could have max 3 kids with a c section :/ im considering a second elective C section (First was emergency). Im scared about the recovery period for the second even though the first was a breeze

@Hayley i mentioned it from the very start for mine, and I was very persistent and stubborn (they tried to convince me not to get a C section). Ultimately they can’t deny you one if it’s what you want, but keep being assertive and asking, I think I got my date at 32 or 34 weeks pregnant. So if you don’t get it within the next few weeks, just keep pushing, though some hospitals have a different protocol and will literally give you the date very last minute, but nonetheless it’s important to be assertive about wanting an elective :)

My midwife told me between 38/39 weeks

@Zaina every recovery is different but mine was really good with all 3 I just hated the spinal with my anxiety and stuff, it was hard to sleep but the pain relief given is soo good! Xx if you have any questions message me I'll be happy to helo

@Hayley hi! They cannot deny you a c section, it’s maternal request c section and you have the right to chose your birth, it’s your right to chose! Keep at them and ask them to refer you for one so you can speak to an obstetrician asap, I asked at 36 weeks, but that’s because I was still unsure, you don’t need a medical reason for maternal request, if they say no still, request someone who will refer you x

Thank you @Millie & @Kiara - I’ve another comm MW app nx week. I’ve my little list of questions and will aim to be a little more forceful. I’ve had 3 comm MW apps and I’ve been seen by a bank MW each time who seemingly only wanted to test my Urine and check my BP 🙄

@Hayley you’ll need to speak to an obstetrician about the c section, as midwives can’t really help much because of the nature of a c section, so as Millie said, you need to speak to an obstetrician asap… from what you say it sounds like your pregnancy is midwife led? Mine was obstetrician led so I was seen by the doctor at almost every appointment so I didn’t need to be referred to one, at your next midwife appointment I think you should really push for the obstetric referral, and if she doesn’t do it then ask for someone who will :)

@Kiara thank you. I don’t have an obstetrician app til BIRTH MONTH!!! I’m pretty appalled that I’m having little to no “education” from the Trust about this 😏

My first was 38 weeks and 5 days :)
