St Mary's hospital experience

Anyone had experience with St Mary's labour ward and NICU?. Been referred to st Mary's to give birth and my son will be going NICU once he is born and been told he will stay there possibly for a couple months. What was your experience?, can siblings visit baby, can I stay with him and if so how long? Have an appointment to visit there in May and meet the staff but just curious

Hey the staff on the maternity ward at st Mary’s are wonderful I had my baby girl there and the midwife’s and nurses are all nice x I’m not sure about nicu but the staff is amazing !!

I gave birth at St. Mary’s last month and I had a lovely experience. I had 2 members of staff allocated to my care. I came in when the junior doctors were on strike but that meant that the ward rounds were all done by consultants so everything went smoothly. I ended up having a cat 2 section and waited only 20 mins for theatres to be ready. I can’t compliment them enough!

The NICU there is amazing. They saved my son’s life and looked after him so well, they also go out of their way for parents to help with the separation and getting you involved in baby’s care. They also have some rooms which parents can stay in when there’s space.

Hi, my care was moved to St Mary's when they found some anomalies at the 20 week scan. I had my baby there in Novemever and he spent 3 weeks in the NICU and then a few nights at Stepping Hill before coming home. I cannot fault the care at all. All the midwives, nurses, doctors, consultants and other staff were amazing. As above, they saved my son's life when he had surgery at 6 days old. They supported with pumping too- seek this out if you're keen to bf. One downside is there are only 5 or 6 rooms for nearly 60 babies in NICU so after I was discharged we could only stay there the night of his surgery. At Stepping Hill there were more rooms for 'rooming in.' Siblings can visit and they've recently started to allow grandparents to visit too. Feel free to message me if you have any other questions. It can be a really scary time with lots of unknowns x I've just seen your other post - my boy has CDH too. He came home after 3.5 weeks and is now nearly 5 months old. I'm here if you want to chat x

I can’t fault St Mary’s. They were lovely on the maternity ward, and they are amazing in NICU. My first was born 7 weeks early and stayed in NICU for 3 weeks. They did a brilliant job in looking after when her when I couldn’t and explained all the things going on. It can be daunting for your baby to be in NICU but please be rest assured that they are doing their very best in looking after your baby. You should ask for a visit around that ward, it might help you put your mind at rest and ask any questions, no matter how silly it sounds. xx

I used to work on the NICU and all the staff were amazing. It's a specialist hospital for surgery so they're used to dealing with all sorts of things. I've not worked there for 2 years, but last I heard siblings were allowed to visit following a pause during covid. Parents are allowed 24 hour visiting, there are rooms on the unit that are prioritised by need, but there's also Ronald Mcdonald house which is on site and you can ask for a referral to stay close by. If you get the opportunity then ask for a tour of the unit and try and think of any questions to ask, they'll try and answer everything the best they can

Thank you. My little one has cdh and will have surgery soon after he is born if he survives so by the sounds of it, he will be in the best hands. Get to have a tour in May so just trying to think of a range of things to ask to put my mind at ease. Thank you all again x
