Autoimmune disease

Hi lovelies, Any other mamas here have an autoimmune disease? I have rheumatoid arthritis and was told at my doctors appointment today it can cause congential heart defects to bub! Her heart looks and sounds good but they couldn't get a great visual as she's a wriggle worm. Now I'm stressing out and feeling guilty 😔

Hey @Claire it’s absolutely not your fault. Big gentle hug if you’ll accept it. Try to take it a day at a time (eg find suitable care if needed etc and know you’re doing your best). With the guilt, I honestly think this is because ppl are socialised to develop unconscious biases and part of that is ableism. And if your Bub does happen to have *anything* just because of a genetic predisposition, it’s up to society to ensure the right care and compassion are available. I have an autoimmune condition and another health thing. Bub has inherited the latter and I’ve felt guilty but I try to process it. Feel free to DM if you want to chat ❤️

Hi! I have Lupus and on medication. I was told the same thing and had the same worry. I'd say that, don't stress so much, it's very low percentage of cases, but good hospital or Ob should really schedule for your routine ultrasound with a note to check on heart development. I had my ultrasound every month and I visit hospital's OB also every month, from week 8 till now, week 32. As I progresses through the scans, I was informed with bub's heart development and I felt very assured and glad as my bub's heart is developing beautifully. So don't be too stressed (stress is enemy for autoimmune!), eat healthy, stay relatively active, and let's hope for the best ☺️

Hi @Cece , sorry to hear that bub inherited some health issues. I had the same concern although would like to positively believe not all baby from mum who has autoimmune will 100% manifest autoimmune condition and symptoms if the environment is not right.. Wanting to ask you when did your bub start manifest symptoms? Was there a certain trigger? How long until the diagnose? Thank you..

As Felicia said, they should schedule extra checks for you. Any additional concerns mean a pregnancy is given more attention and you may need to see specialists. I had gestational diabetes with my first so got used to having a lot of ultrasounds and with my second only had the minimum so felt I missed out lol Try not to worry too much, if they have any concerns they will follow up on them.

Hey @Felicia with my autoimmune stuff, I think it just increases Bub’s risk to getting the same condition I have but fingers crossed all clear so far. My condition (and many other autoimmune conditions) was triggered by a virus. Bub’s inherited my thalassemia - it doesn’t affect him directly except make him prone to anaemia. Will only be a concern if he goes on to have kids with someone else with the exact same genetic condition. The human body is bizarre!

Totally Not your fault. I’m in a similar position but different autoimmune. Just take it day by day
