Tongue tie

My LG had her GP check and first imms today. She has bad reflux and colic and is on gavsicon. We have recently changed bottles and milk which is helping but not resolving. I mentioned to the GP that I thought she had tongue tie, he confirmed she has one (I think posterior) but because she’s gaining weight and she’s nearly 9 weeks old he said he’s not referring her. Is it still worth going private for tongue tie at her age? Has anyone else done this? I’m happy to pay if it’s going to help her

My little girl had tongue tie as well and my health visitor referred me. Yes my little girl was gaining weight but it was really affecting her feeding. She was very gassy and unsettled so we had it done at 10 weeks old. Having it done has made a massive difference to her feeding and overall mood so I would say it’s definite worth getting it done. Could you speak to your health visitor first and see if they can referee you first before you go private?x

I went private when my LO was ~3months old and it was the best decision I made for him. The difference was like night and day. My son’s TT was a really really bad one which would have affected his speech and eating, so it’s worth bearing that in mind too.

@Julia I’m glad your little girl is better, sounds like it’s worth it. My little one is so unsettled with feeds in the evening, and starting to affect the day time now as well. She dribbles/spits out a lot, her top lip goes in when sucking, her wind is terrible. I will speak to the health visitor and see what they suggest, thank you

In terms of getting referred, I know some NHS hospitals won’t even bother seeing you if you’re formula feeding

My baby is just 4 months and had his snipped last week. Cost me think £230 for a consult with the IBCLC and then the snip but would 100% do again

@Kirsty Honestly the difference is amazing. She no longer gets angry when feeding and there’s no air bubbles in her bottles anymore as she would suck on her bottle and let air in. So yeah if your health visitor doesn’t refer you I’d go private😊x

I had my little boy's tongue tie released by the NHS and although it was successful it made no difference to his feeding, he is still fussy and uncomfortable a lot of the time!

I will add that personally I think going private is better as I also found out he has a high palette which also causes some issues and that can’t be rectified. So though the tongue tie release has helped it hasn’t fixed everything but I also have a complete understanding about why. She is also at the end of the phone if I have any other questions!

Personally I would get it done if you have the opportunity and if going private is an option for you. We only just found out our LB has one when he was 6 months and we've now been referred to a surgical team to assess whether they can cut it now as it would have to be done under general anaesthetic. It's causing him so many problems with feeding and sleeping and might affect his speech too. I wish we'd been able to have it done earlier.

@Rebecca oh bless him, hope you get sorted soon! I’m going to look in to clinics local to us. It sounds like it’s worth having it done

@Kirsty might also be worth seeing if you can self refer? My GP and HV wouldn't put any referrals in for us, then I discovered I could self refer to the Infant Feeding Team and they assessed him and saw the tongue tie straight away and they have now referred us to Oral Surgery. I wish I had known sooner I could self refer!

@Rebecca thank you, was that at your local hospital?

@Kirsty it was
