No Words Yet

Anyone else had this situation? I'm starting to worry. 😞 My daughter just turned 13 months old on March 16th. She babbles plenty, but not a single word. My husband and I both talk to her, we read to her, we name a object and point at it, we sing and talk along with Ms. Rachel videos, etc. I don't know what else to do.

She could have a speech delay just talk to her pediatrician about it every kid is different.

She’ll talk when she’s ready. You can have her evaluated of course but she’ll ultimately talk when she’s ready every kid is different don’t look at the milestone charts as law more so ballpark ranges or averages. My nephew didn’t talk until he was 4 nothing was wrong with him he went to every therapist you can think of and never spoke a word until one day he just started speaking in complete sentences lol

@Jasmin Yeah, her 15 month appointment is in late May so her pediatrician said if she hasn't said any words by then we will discuss what can be done. I know each kid is different, it's just so hard when I see other moms with 13 month olds who are already saying some words.

@Taylor 🥳🥵 I know 😭 Like I just mentioned to Jasmin, it's just so hard when I see other moms with 13 month olds saying some words. And oh my, that is a long time!

If you say her name does she respond? If you ask her to do something or point to something does she do it? Is she signing or trying to get you to understand what she wants (like pointing to a drink/toy/arms up to be held/etc)? If she's meeting all of those other milestones then it's nothing to worry about yet. My son is almost 2.5yo and babbles and says Mama and dad. But he's meeting all other milestones, recognizes his colors/animals/numbers. He's just stubborn lol. Just keep working on it and she will get there! If you feel you want evaluated then there's no harm in that too!

@Liv She rarely responds to her name, she doesn't point to objects or do what I say (like coming to me for example) The only way she tells me she wants something (usually nap or hunger) is by getting fussy. She's not doing any of those things unfortunately.

@Taylor 🥳🥵 This gives me so much hope! 💚

Does she even say mama or dada? My daughter only said those 2 for the longest time, then one day she got "yah" and that made 3 words for 15 months which hit the milestone. By 18 months she was picking up a lot more, but it was like 17-18 months when she actually started getting more than those 3 and shes now 21 months and suddenly exploding and picking up words left and right. But still a lot of babble and hardly any words are pronounced clearly.

Speech tends to ramp up. So they go from basically no words to one or two and then it's like they won't shut up. And when they say words it can be in their little baby language. So if you constantly hear ba and it means bottle for your kid, that's technically a word. Signs also count! Animal noises too! But if she's not hearing well it can delay speech. I'd also ask for her ears to be checked thoroughly

@Carina Sadly not even mama or dada 😞

@Chrissy She hears totally fine. She just chooses not to respond. 😅 I know she hears fine because she reacts to sounds. Plus, her doctor checked recently. Anyway, she doesn't say words even in baby talk. She also doesn't sign, make animal sounds, point to what she wants, etc.

Her ears may look normal but there could be something behind her ear drum. I'd seriously ask for another hearing test

@Chrissy I can but I know she hears fine. She comes whenever her daddy calls her when they're playing. But if we try to get her attention when not playing, she ignores.

My 3 year old didn’t have any words at all at 18 months. Nothing. By 20 months she had several words, and at just over 2 was talking in sentences. Now she’s 3 you can converse with her as you would an adult. It came on really quickly out of nowhere xx

@Sadé yes girl ! Not all kids can be measured by the milestone chart. My 2 year old didn’t start saying mama for a long time her first word was yellow 😂 she learned to crawl & then had no interest in walking until after she turned 2. Nothing was wrong with her she just didn’t feel the need to stand up. I’ve learned to never compare your child to the next it’s just setting yourself up for heartbreak

Don’t sweat it, trying to say one to two words is actually more of a 15-month milestone. Soon she’ll be almost 2 and you’ll be wishing they’d hush. 🫶🏽

My son was the same. He wasn’t saying anything that young.

Our son is a little over 2.5 and I got him in to see a speech pathologist for some of the same reasons you’ve listed and she said that he has “suspected apraxia”. Kids under 3 can’t formally be diagnosed with childhood apraxia because the toddlers just won’t sit through the test that they use to check for it lol but she also checked for enlarged tonsils, tongue tie, weak facial muscles, and anything in his ears. Apraxia (from what I’m learning) is when the child knows what it wants to say but that their brains just have a difficult time communicating those signals to the muscles used for speech. It is rare (1/1000) and every child is different, so I know some kids do eventually start speaking more clearly and picking up words all of a sudden- however I would also encourage you to maybe seek a specialist just to try to narrow it down. If it is Apraxia then it’s best to start speech therapy now 💜 best of luck darlin! You got this 💪

@Lauren Oh wow. I'm sorry to hear you went through that. Based on what I've seen moms say in this post and another post I made, I shouldn't stress about it yet because some moms said their little ones didn't say their first word until they were between 16 to 20 months. Plus until this morning, I forgot that when a baby or toddler is working on one milestone, other ones go on the back burner until they master it. And right now she is really focused on taking her first steps. So I'm hoping that means once she masters walking she'll work on saying words next. I will definitely keep getting a referral for a specialist in mind but since it's a rare condition I'm going to hold off for now to see if she talks soon. But if she is still hasn't said a single word by the time she is 2 I will definitely look into getting a referral for a specialist.

Omg yes 😓 I’m so sorry, I was reading through the comments early this morning and completely forgot that YOUR baby wasn’t even 2 yet 🥴 I had it in my head that she was the same age as my son. Doh! 😖 Definitely do what you feel is right and thanks for listening to my little spiel on apraxia 💜

@Lauren Haha it's ok. That's why I said in my post she's 13 months old. I hope your kiddo is talking fine now. 😊

Special education background here : I would not worry, but there is nothing wrong with having an evaluation and receiving services. Your public school system should have free services that include speech. This does NOT mean your peanut is not perfect, but it doesn't hurt to work with a professional!
