Solids

When is the best time to start baby on food. So my LB is only 11 weeks and my in laws keep going on my giving him food and has ordered some baby food for him. That start at 4 months, I have always been told that you don’t give food to babies untill 6 months. Has any one given their babies food before 6 months and what is your experience?

Really just wait until 6 months. And even then, start slowly. They should still get the vast majority of their nutrition from milk whatever the type. Solids initially, are really just tastes of things really. Some in older generations will pressure you to start earlier. But up to date advice is to start at 6 months. Weaning too early can potentially have negative effects such as food intolerances, allergies, inappropriate weight gain, and I believe some believe that early weaning has the potential to cause lifelong gastrointestinal complications. Why are they so keen for you to start at 4 months? I’ve never understood why some people are so keen to push ahead with it.

@Rosa to be honest I have no idea why.

It’s funny isn’t it…. There seems to be a generational hang up about this - I suppose as there can be with many things 😅 but there really does seem to be a lot of emotion invested in when to wean! With the best will in the world, my mum was also very keen for me to start at 4 months. I completely refused. I just wouldn’t consider it. I think sometimes there’s this thinking - particularly with male babies that, “he’s a hungry boy, he NEEDS food”. 🤪 It’s hard sometimes, as people can be so emotionally driven about it - for God knows what reason 😅 I say do what you think is right for your baby. Don’t be pressured. But I say wait until 6 months. Interestingly, my mother completely came round to the 6 month thinking in the end and actively supported waiting until then 👌🏻

Also, older generations never seem to have heard of the idea of certain foods having more potential to cause allergy / and that you should individually try those foods to check that baby tolerates them. There’s quite a lot of them to consider and gradually try with the baby. This has nothing to do with what you’re asking, but it’s just interesting to mention.

6 months unless they are approved by dr to start a little earlier for a specific reason x

Their bellies are not developed enough to digest food until 6 months. At 4 months, you can give them baby rice with their formula milk as it is gentle enough to digest. Tell your in laws to respect your wishes and that it is not up to them to decide
