New to Autism

My son is 2 and was just diagnosed with ASD. I am very confused if autism and autism spectrum disorder are two different things. I wasn’t given a level to his diagnosis. Any thoughts or input is appreciated 💙

My oldest daughter got diagnosed with hfa (high functioning autism.) That was when she was 3. She is 10 now, it's has been a difficult journey. Their moods shifts very easy, I suggest you get a therapist, a IEP for your child. It helps when they are school, it helps to talk to parents with children who have similar diagnosis. I know didn't have anymore to talk to. But I'm here if you need to know anything.

Autism and Autism spectrum disorder are the same thing yes. ASD is just the technical term I guess? And also explains the spectrum of it. I was diagnosed when I was 18, feel free to ask me any questions I may be able to answer some.

@Charleigh so you remember how you were as a teen? My daughter is going in her preteen years and I don't how that's going to look.

Thank you ❤️❤️❤️ do they usually always diagnose with levels?

@Destiny yes I'm only 22 so still remember it, but as it is a spectrum it wouldn't be exactly the same. I had a lot of issues in school though, mostly just issues making friends and bullying which can get worse as you go into highschool because then you get hormones, things get awkward.

@Charleigh aww my baby girl

As I was diagnosed at 18 I'm not sure how it works exactly getting diagnosed as a child, but it may be because he's so young you weren't given a level.

Hi! I hug you! In my case, my little one is almost 4, the diagnosis we got is that she is neurodivergent but not necessarily autistic. Really confusing to be honest, she is just starting to use spoken language and it's tough, especially since I have an 8 month old baby and I feel I can't be good enough for both while working from home as well etc 🥲 trying to stay positive of course, mainly for them but when I think about the future and I'm doing what's best I get really anxious

Honestly depends where you are. My son was diagnosed at 18 months, he’s two now, no level. Truth is you won’t know what their autism will look like because they are going to grow and change the next few years I just go with the flow and do early intervention

@Charleigh I’m so sorry Destiny this is my fear with public school 🥺

@Romi hugging you back! It is a though pill to swallow especially thinking future wise but just know you are doing your BEST ♥️ I do see how that can be challenging with taking care of two kids but it’s only so much you can do

@Jay thank you ❤️ hoping I get over this hump soon just overwhelmed now with trying to figure out services when I don’t have a stay at home job

@Destiny if you're in a position to do homeschooling or distance education that can be helpful if she struggles, but she could surprise you and do really well but it will eventually get better once she reaches adulthood.

Where are you located

The place that diagnosed my son didn’t give levels but when he’s had other assessments done they did. I think it just depends who you see.
