Shocked at husband

After our 6 month old finished eating his banana my husband put the baby’s silicone plate on the floor for the dog to lick off the banana. I didn’t realize until an hour later I saw the baby’s plate on the floor. I FREAKED OUT! I asked him why it was in the floor and he said it was for our dog and then he grabbed the plate and put it on the sink. I asked him if he wasn’t thinking? And he made it about my higher cleanliness standard and how it’s hard for him to predict how I want things done and how I’m sensitive to germs. He recognizes our different standard and he seems willing to change. Anyone going through conflicts with partner around the organization and cleanliness of baby’s things? Like how is this behavior okay? I get it we can’t sanitize everything and anything the baby touches but this is just too much for me to handle. I am actually appalled and cannot believe he thought that would ever be okay. His family is the type who does not care if shoes are worn in the home. All of this drives me nuts especially now postpartum and how it impacts my baby and his environment.

What's wrong with putting the baby's plate on the floor for the dog to lick clean? I'm sorry but I think I'm with your husband on this one...

Yeah I’m with you. I can’t with shoes in the house. And wouldn’t eat from a plate my dog licked clean let allow my baby too. But yeah everyone’s different, what’s right for one person just may not sit well with you and that’s okay. I think if he’s willing to adjust that’s great because there’s nothing wrong with standards :)

I'm pretty sure some hot water and soap can get that plate squeaky clean again. Just make sure it gets washed. But I totally agree with you on the shoes in the house thing. That's a major pain.

We have separated dishes for the dog and us including my baby. If it was some stray or stranger’s dog I would react the same way. If it was my dog, I would probably say look just keep these away from the dog. At the end of the day, she licks the dogs paws, she licks floors and trying to catch bugs (she is about to become toddler) so as much as i clean every day, she comes into contact with the dog regardless. Dont work yourself up too much over it.

@Vervain do you allow your dog to kiss and suck on your baby?

@Katerina even if she licks the dogs paws, licks the floor and try to catch bugs do you watch her to do it or do you try to stop her?

@Anna I feel like there is a difference between the dog accidentally licking it and the father purposely putting it on the floor for the dog to lick cross contaminated the plate you can never kill all the germs

I'm with you on this one as well. My husband and I dislike dogs because they are so unclean. I would have definitely been upset over this.

@Princess of course, but wait and see when yours is a toddler. They are so super fast 😂

I don’t care about the germs and would even argue germs are good but I still have to side with you on this one. Teaching a dog not to ask your child for food or just take it is going to be a million times harder if they think the plate is okay to eat off of. I actually have special plates my dog knows she gets dog-safe human food if she sees and it really helps. She is not allowed our food off of our plates.

@Princess wait, what kind of germs can't soap wash off? Honesty curious.

@Katerina okay so the whole point is you stop her you don’t intentionally watch her do it like he intentionally put the plate down

@Princess but i agreed with the OP If u read my comment, u can clearly see it. I just didn’t think overreacting was needed. And getting too upset was needed.

We let our dog lick all of our dishes. It’s not a big deal. Just wash it. So far my 9 month old has never been sick.

I don't see the issue as long as the plate was cleaned afterwards 🤷🏼‍♀️ as kids get older you'll be appalled at the gross stuff they get into lol. It's good for their immune system, within reason of course. Shoes in the house must be an American thing, we don't do that in Canada.

@Princess i don't have a dog but if I did, yes I would totally allow my baby to be exposed to my dog. There is plenty of research that shows that the modern American tendency to over sanitize everything and over protect our babies from everything (animals especially) actually results in worse health outcomes and weaker immunity long term.

Just bc you have a phobia of germs doesnt mean your husband is in the wrong or warrants you to overreact towards him or that its his duty to cater to your specific opinions on cleanliness. You just clean the plate? Hot water and soap will do the trick.. exposure to some germs is beneficial especially to kids and there's no way you can prevent their exposure. It builds their immune system so that they dont get as sick as they grow older...especially when they become school aged and are around germs 24/7

I will let my dog lick off my plate(metal/porcelain), wash it and use that plate again but not my baby’s 😅. Babies just have a weaker immune system and I just wouldn’t risk it. Especially with silicone plates. They’re porous, so they hold smells and stains. And even if it can be completely sanitised, there’s just a slight ick factor. I love my dog but he also licks his butthole. As for the shoes, I’m on your side as well. I also agree that you can’t sanitise everything but shoes belong outside. Just have home shoes if he doesn’t want to go bare feet. It’s not just tracking in dog poop/ vomit/ public toilet particles but also chemicals/ debris from outside into your home floors where your baby will be crawling around, dropping food, picking it up, dropping pacifiers and putting it back in their mouths etc. Adults have a stronger immune system and we don’t crawl and eat things off the floor. I don’t think you’re overreacting. And a middle ground can be achieved with your partner.

Wow just clean the plate and ask him not to do it again 😂 What you gonna do when your baby goes through a phase of trying to kiss your dog's arsehole? Sorry but your baby is gonna be getting up to a lot more unhygienic shit than using a plate a dog has licked that I would expect you to wash thoroughly anyway 🤷‍♀️ You have a dog running around the house and you're concerned about shoes on the floor? Chill

I don't think I have a high standard and I'm pretty messy myself... but letting a dog lick or eat off of the baby's plates is disgusting. If it was just me I'd lowkey want to throw the plate out

I mean I think it’s best to breathe and try to be measured in how you respond just in life, it’s better for you and whomever you’re communicating with. But yeah I wouldn’t like that either.

I'd be mad about the plate being left on the floor. Who cares if your dog ... your family member ... licks the plate. I hope youre washing it before it's used again lol. What do you do if your dog licks one of you guys? Bleach your whole body or the baby's?

We let our dog lick off our plates before putting them in the dishwasher 😬

Our dog always lick our plates after we eat. It is his treats 😂 We really don’t care

I really don't think it matters if the dog licks the plate after the baby has finished, it's going to be washed anyway. I think a lot of people nowadays go too far with hygiene. Bugs are good for you, they help your immune system.

Yeah it’s not worth getting angry over. Just explain that you don’t like it and would rather he didn’t. Problem solved. Hot soapy water and sterilise if you want to and it’s good as new. I wouldn’t let my dog eat off babies plate as I don’t want to set an example that it’s okay for him to do so. If he did, I’d just wash the plate. People implying it’s the same as dog “licking of sucking” baby is crazy 🙈

The fact that people are even trying to justify a dog licking out of a 6 months plate tells me everything I need to know… yes we get it, it can be cleaned but it’s a babies plate.

Im occasionally a germaphobe but dogs licking a plate babies use or any human for that fact, is disgusting. Dogs have bowls and food dishes for a reason. I would’ve honestly cried seeing it because something’s just gross me out way too much. I’m pretty sure I have autism though (currently being tested for the first time). So certain things just really freak me out more than they should. I don’t even let my dog on my bed because occasionally I’ll let my son sleep with me and I don’t want dog hair to get all over him or possibly swallow some. And before someone asks what if the dog licks my baby, I don’t let him. I live with my mom right now because I’m a single mom and my son is only 3ms old but all the guys on the sperm donors (bd) side are allergic to dogs. And I’m pretty sure he is as well. I let him sniff my son when he came from the hospital and a few times since then to get use to him but I don’t let the dog lick him.

@Lauren are you done being a bitch

@Lauren I think her hygiene standards are normal I think shoes in the house is a no, especially your outside shoes. I have indoor shoes.

I wouldn't let my dog lick my baby's plate but i do allow the cat to lick our plates yeah and then they go in the dishwasher. I dont see it as a big deal our cat is a house cat that doesnt go outside. Cats and dogs are actually cleaner than humans. Our hands have so much bacteria. Im personally biased as my cat sleeps in my bed and i use to kiss my dog.

For me personally, I absolutely wouldn’t let my dog lick my daughter’s plate. If I have any leftover which he can have they go in his food bowls. I want him to know my daughter’s food isn’t his and I wouldn’t want him associating her plates with him getting food. That being said. If people do, do it, it’s their house, their business.

@Kali really dunno who you think you are to call me a bitch 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 the OP needs a reality check. Tbh the worst part about this whole post is that she obviously had a conversation with her husband and found a common ground, she states he was willing to change. That is very kind and accommodating of him. But she STILL came on here to slate him. Not sure what validation OP needed really, perhaps to revel in us all calling her husband a scumbag.

@Lauren I mean I really think she has the right to be upset, yeah they spoke. But she’s allowed to be upset? Especially postpartum everyone’s got their thing that bugs them. Some people is germs, some people it’s chores, for me, it’s you.

These same people who are against their dog licking their daughters plate are probably the same people who allow family members to kiss their baby on the face and lips. At least be consistent if your gonna say animals cant.

@Kali I'm so very upset that some random woman from Canada doesn't like me 🥲

Tbh I would find it very gross if a dog licked any cutlery/plates, but I don’t have a dog. However I do find it a bit odd that you’re bothered by your husband wearing shoes in the house but you have a dog running around? And I can only guess you don’t fully clean your dogs feet every single time you come back from a walk? We’re personally a household that doesn’t wear shoes in our home, but as said we don’t have a dog. I would say you overreacted a far bit, especially as it seems he’s happy to come to a compromise anyway.

That’s absolutely disgusting, I’d also be appalled.

You are 100% right. Animals lick their buts, etc its totally unhygienic and its good that he agreed to work on his standards

I'm shocked that there are some comments were people are saying it's ok for the dog to lick the plate. Don't dogs lick randome things. What about all the germs that the baby can catch. I thinks it's disgusting that he allowed the dog to lick his babies plate.

Okay I’m not the tidiest of people but letting animals eat or your plates/kids plates is a big no no. Like if you want to give them the leftovers put it in the animals bowl!

This post has taught me to never eat at people’s houses 🤢🤢 dogs lick their asses and eat their own vomit… no way would I let mine lick the plates me or my children eat off… I have a cat who I love to death 🙏 but I’m not sharing my plates with him, after he spends hours a day licking his booty 🙃

@AmberA🌈👶🏽❤🦋 I don’t allow my family to kiss my daughter on the mouth, but I’m also hoping my nana doesn’t lick her own butt sooooo…. 😅 not really the same thing

@Abbie if your mum is still married to your dad. They probably have sex no? Its still as dirty as an animal licking themself. Plus there's more germs in a human hand than probably in a dog/cats paw as their licking their own body

@AmberA🌈👶🏽❤🦋 we clean our mouths, how many people brush their dogs teeth 🤷🏼‍♀️ and like I said my mom doesn’t get on all fours and lick her butt or my plates for that matter 🙄

If you genuinely do not believe your dishwasher can clean a plate a dog licked then why would you believe it could clean bowls that have held raw eggs or cutting boards that have had raw chicken on them or any of the billion other things that could make you and your kid sick? If you trust those things to be cleaned then you can trust this plate to be clean. If your dog licks your hands or your husbands hands or you pet your dogs fur which it has licked with the same mouth it licked this plate with and you trust soap and water to clean your hands before touching your child why would this plate not be clean? I think you’re overreacting.

I grew up in a house where our dogs would lick our plates. It was normal to me but now I find it disgusting.

@Sarah yeah it really seems like a lot of people don’t have much faith in their dishwashers or hot soapy water.

Like you, I do want things cleaner than my husband does like no shoes in the house. But with this one, if the dish is going to be washed anyways I don’t think I would get too upset. If you really want them separated, just calmly let him know so he won’t do it in the future.

Cats and dogs actually naturally produce an enzyme in their saliva that have antibacterial properties so they are in fact very clean in that aspect. Growing up my dogs would often lick our plates clean and my cats would wake me up by licking my face. Hot soapy water will be more than enough to sufficiently clean the plate and kill any harmful germs but if you’re really that worried then sterilise it too before it’s used again
