Paid Parental Leave

Hi everyone my paid parental leave finally got approved and I received $10,416.45. I really have no idea how it all works but does that amount seem right to you? I’m now sadly a single mum so I need to update my details with Centrelink but wasn’t sure if that was the whole amount I’m meant to receive! Any help would be appreciated. Thank you 😊

it depends how many days you got approved and if they back paid you. unfortunately they took four months to process my application so back paid me as a lump sum instead of doing fortnightly payments for future dates and consequently i got taxed a large chunk of it so without knowing the specifics it’s hard to say if the above is accurate or not .

I think that’s right after tax, it’s minimum wage for 12 weeks and is taxed

@erica did it get paid to you directly from centerlink or your employer? As it was backpay, it should have still been taxed at the fortnightly rate

You should also be entitled to family tax benefit part 1 and part 2 now your a single mum too

@erica I think this is probably what’s happened with me! They took almost 5 months to approve my application

@Jamie well it’s meant to go through my employer so I still receive salary packaging but unsure if this is happening

@Charlotte thank you for the heads up! The single mum territory is new waters for me sadly

@Mary-Ellen it’s 14 weeks

@Jamie it got paid through my employee however because they paid a large chunk on top of the work maternity pay i was taxed at a higher tax bracket as confirmed by payroll

@erica I was the same, I only ended up with about 7K of the actual money. 10K seems great 😂

@Adrienne I got about $7K too but now I’m wondering if they take into consideration financial situation

That seems right. Also have a look into single parenting payments and apply for child support (get Centrelink to chase him if he isn't good with taking care of his responsibilities)

Same thing happened to me - because of the delay in receiving the funds, my work had to back pay me so I received a lump sum, however, because of this, it was as though I was making ‘9k a week’ which is not the case, so I was then taxed at that rate. I’ll be getting what I was getting taxed back during tax time because I haven’t worked since February last year.
