Hand flapping

I really don't want to jump on the whole 'could my baby be autistic' train and know that for the most part it's too early to tell, I also want to point out that I don't feel like my baby being autistic would be a negative thing, I just want to be prepared to best support her. Does anybody else's baby flap their arm up and down when they're stimulated? Just wanting to check if this is normal baby behaviour or stimming?

Yes, my LO does it all the time! I’d say it’s pretty normal 😁 xx

My little one does it all the time when she’s excited, so do most of her little friends ☺️

Yes x Flaps hands when excited and sometimes claps

Yes x

Yes all the time when excited

My little one does this a lot! Especially when she’s excited x

Thank you everyone! I think logically I knew this was the case but I couldn't shake the niggly voice in my head 😂❤️

My boy flaps his arms and kicks his legs when he’s excited. I haven’t thought anything of it x

Just wanted to say a lot of swimming behaviours cross into completely normal infant behaviours!! They're learning to regulate themselves and process emotions, so technically it is a form of stimming! It would only be something to question if its continued past infancy and usually you'd notice other traits too (a lot of which can also be normal for infancy, hence why it's pretty unlikely to get a diagnosis until 3+) xx

So as long as it doesn’t continue past the age of 3 it’s fine. It’s so easy to fall down the rabbit hole (the amount of TikTok’s I’ve seen like early signs my baby was autistic and it’s like splashing in the bath just scares everyone) x

Yes we call it happy flapping 🤣x

Everyone says wow look at his motorcycle hands 😂

Yes and her face goes like this 😱 and she waves her arms around. I’ve only ever seen one other baby do it at sensory!

@Natalie my lil one does that exact thing!! Mouth wide open and he just starts flapping🤣x

Yes, mine does all the time. Her hands flap and her little ankles turn round and round. 😍

My daughter also does this. Sometimes when frustrated too. I’ve also been worried about this so it’s reassuring to see other people saying the same.

Can I ask, does anyone else’s baby do it everyday/all the time when not occupied with an object? She doesn’t do it when out in the pram, being carried or car seat but nearly always in the house. She’s teething atm and has been constipated recently whilst weaning. I thought maybe an expression of discomfort However, I can’t help but feel like it’s constant now. I have no other concerns- answers to name, makes eye contact, smiles etc but the flapping is sooo frequent.

@Natalie my little one waves her right hand up and down quite often, her left hand she moves side to side usually if she doesn't want something (food, a kiss, her face wiped etc)

My little girl does it loads too. I've not come across anyone doing anything like it at baby groups so glad it's not just us 😂🤦
