How do I know my newborn is getting enough milk

Hey everyone! I’m a first time mom and my baby is 5 days old. I feed her every time she gets up but it seems like she doesn’t get enough and she hasn’t been peeing or pooping like the doctor told me She was. Any advice ?

Are you breastfeeding?

Yes I am

My nurses at the hospital told me to nurse like usual and then supplement with a tiny bit of formula after each feed while we wait for my supply to come in because my daughter was not getting enough from my boobs for the first week there until my supply came in. Then we switched to all breastfeeding and there was no need to supplement with any formula. I could tell she was not getting enough because she would suck and when she wasn’t getting anything she would start getting frustrated and start crying.

Poops will be kinda all over the place especially if you are BF. At least 6 pee diapers a day is a good measure to start with. Is your doctor concerned?

We saw a pediatrician at a few days, 1 week, and 2 weeks and they’ll let you know if baby is gaining weight as expected or not!

Has she been weighed? I would talk to your doctor to make sure everything is okay. I’m based in the UK and this is the advice we have regarding breastfeeding in the first few days: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/baby/breastfeeding-and-bottle-feeding/breastfeeding/the-first-few-days/

I’m giving her some formula that the doctor recommended after each feeding but it seems like she chokes on it and I’m scared to give it to her. I took her to the pediatrician yesterday and she told me that everything was good. Just to keep feeding on demand but I’m just scared she has something else with not being able to pee or poop.

I would say if she's not crying after you feed then she's getting enough. Also I read the when newborns are hungry they clench both hands into fists, then when they are full they uunclench them like they are relaxed. Not sure if it's true but it's been true for my newborn

@Alyssa i’ve heard that’s true too but for my kids they just apparently love having clenched fists lol so I would look at their hands but then also if they are crying or not or how long they just ate for. Just context clues to see if they are actually hungry still or just like having fists

Always follow with a bottle was my motto. Id pump right after feeding and give 1oz at a time.

You could look into a lactation consultant. They can do a weighted feed after breastfeeding to see how much she drank.

Also a first time mom. Definitely supplement with formula. I had this issue with my 6 day old son (6 days old today). As soon as we started supplementing his pooping and peeing increased to what it should be for newborns.

I would watch out on feeding with a bottle my daughter was acting like she wasn’t satisfied and was still hungry so I gave her a bottle on day 2 ever since then she hasn’t breast feed again ! Won’t latch anymore 🥲

Counting pee & poopy diapers is the best indicator when breastfeeding

Same here, if they are hungry you have to feed them and there is nothing wrong with that. It took a few days for my milk to kick in but try pumping and keeping to a schedule with it and take your time
