every feed

Does anyone else’s newborn spot their milk out everywhere during each feed? My newborn is almost 4 weeks and regardless as to whether it’s breastfeeding or bottle feeding, the amount of milk lost is quite high.

it could possibly be the flow of the teet? check what number it says on the teet itself, i used 0 for a while then moved onto 1 and gave him breaks so that he could swallow what was in his mouth and it seemed to help him learn.

What size test are you using? It could be too fast for him. I would also sit him up and pace feed, allowing him to do it at his pace rather than the milk just flowing in.

@Ellie i’m unsure on how to give breaks, i do pull the bottle out of her mouth sometimes if it gets too much. I thought it was the test size too but why would she be doing it to the breast too

It's more than likely the flow if she's doing it whilst breastfeeding aswell. With the bottle you can try pace feeding/breaks and when breastfeeding you can try pumping for the first few minutes to get rid of the let down rush and then put her on the nipple. Also try feeding in different positions that make her work for the milk more rather than everything just flowing into her mouth and you can also take breaks whilst breastfeeding x

Just make sure it’s slow flow the slowest possible, and then with the breast if it’s a lot there too I would maybe contact a lactation specialist make sure she isn’t tongue tied etc…

My first two thought are the flow of the test might be too quick but also Does she have a tongue tie? It could be that she can’t latch properly which causes a gap around the bottle teat and or nipple when feeding? Worth getting checked for as my son and daughter both had them and was causing problems latching

i’d definitely check the teet size first but she could be swallowing some and then storing the rest in her mouth as that’s what my son did and still does😂it’s to sort of give them a breather for a minute so that’s what she could possibly be doing on the breast also? try sitting her up and letting her go with her own sort of rhythm, if you feed her lying down then maybe try taking the bottle out of her mouth/ removing her from the breast and sitting her up for a second, rub her back or just wipe her mouth then let her go back to feeding just so she knows she can have a break and she will then learn her own rhythm. hope this helps xx

I was advised with bottle feeding to keep the bottle horizontal and not lifted too much as the milk is constantly flowing, gives them time to swallow what’s already there

Try a zero flow/ slow flow. Also, I can't tell but do you have bottle standing up? If so, then think about it this way... it's not really comfortable for us to lay down on our back and drink from a waterbottle...we need to sit at an incline for a comfortable drink with the ability to not have liquid pouring into our mouths until we are ready.

Bottle feeding baby should be pace fed sat up rather than laid down. If baby does this on bottle or breast please get them checked for tongue tie/ oral restrictions as this is very common in tongue tied babies and there is plenty of help available which will help x

My baby was the same and EBF, never had a bottle. You prob have a fast let down! It gets better as they get older xx

Could be a sign of tongue tie so check with your HV if your little one hasn’t been checked for it yet

Oh yes can still be flow even with breast. I exclusively breastfeed and overproduce so sometimes it’s just pouring out of my nipples and baby can’t drink that fast 😭

@Nicoleta the midwives said thag she has a small tongue tie but it “shouldn’t affect her eating” but mentioned getting referred but I haven’t heard from them…they only noticed because i said it was so painful to breastfeed due to her latch

@Chloe if you can, try and video her doing this while also breastfeeding. You can show it to your GP or paediatric Dr.

Bubba had a very small tongue tie that we took care of in the hospital. They said it wouldn’t affect his eating but there were really no cons to it. Anyways, he still has milk spill out of his mouth too even with it snipped.

Look into slow flow nipples and pace feeding. Changing the position of the bottle and how you’re holding her may help

Spit up always looks like more than it really is. And you can breastfeed laying on your back to slow the flow a bit. Maybe try burping more often?

I was going to comments some suggestions but everyone has already given them all:)

This is actually really common, it's backwash. Babies backwash into you to signal your body to make the antibodies they need. If you look on Instagram at "Something Incredible" aka the science baby they really eased my mind as a ftm x

My baby did something similar, the nipple flow was way to high for her

Mine did this. We switched to slow flow and it turned out she had a lip and tongue tie

Should be checked for oral ties. This is indicative of a poor latch. My daughter had a tongue tie and I’m getting my son checked soon as well, because he has a shallow latch.

@Amelia the midwives said that she has a small tongue tie but won’t affect her abilities…i don’t know what to do

@Chloe I'd go see a pediatric dentist and get their opinion. I was told it wouldn't affect my girl either and it did

@Chloe oral ties can cause issues later with speech even if they don’t affect feeding as a young baby x
