So far we haven’t used any actual life vests because my kids grew up in the pool (my oldest is the 2yr old), so we either just held them or put them in a float like this: https://a.co/d/bfPsF3s Now that they’re getting more “independent” I’m actually in the same situation of looking into what to get. I know the ones that only go on their arms are supposed to be bad for learning to swim (I swam competitively my whole life, and also lifeguarded and gave swim lessons to littles throughout high school and college for money). But the floats that give more buoyancy to their backs are also bad, because they push the kids onto their stomach which is a drowning hazard. It’s always better to have something that pushes them onto their back. All that said…I’ve heard good things about these couple ones, and currently deciding between them: https://a.co/d/fueKHT3 https://a.co/d/0BGGvEN
IMO, already being 2 yrs old, as long as you’re keeping a good eye on them and YOU can either reach the bottom of the pool/lake/etc. I’d say you’d be fine with most floatation devices. Good luck!

Those were the other two I was trying to post but it only showed one link in my comment for some reason
@Laura thank you, I'll check those out! Yeah I was confused because I read that it's not good to have the ones that go around their arms but that doesn't leave many options. I wasn't sure if I should just get them a life jacket or what to get
Following because I have a 2 yr old
