If your baby rolls on their stomach during the night...

*EDIT* FORGOT TO MENTION... this photo is not his crib where he sleeps at night. This is a spare one downstairs where i watch him during the day :) in his crib he has no blankets- just the mattress and fitted sheet. What do you do? Do you leave them to sleep in that position ? Or do you roll them back ? Mine hasn't figured out yet how to roll back... but he LOVES sleeping on his stomach with his face down. He is comfortable this way. My partner says leave him ... but I just can't. I'm super paranoid he will suffocate or not breathe right. He just rolls all the time ! I don't know what to do because I'm up all night stressing... but how can you stop them rolling ?!

I don’t know what to suggest about them stopping rolling, but it can be a huge suffocation risk sleeping on their front if they aren’t yet able to roll onto their back themselves. So I personally would continue to keep putting him on his back. Hopefully someone else has some helpful advice x

I would be the same as you, I’d be so worried and paranoid all night and probably would never get any sleep! I pray my little one doesn’t do this! But me personally I would keep putting him back so his laid on his back!

@Naomi these were my thoughts exactly. My partner was like 'it's fine... leave him. He is comfortable.' And I'm like... 'are you serious?! He is covering his face' Why are men so calm about these things....🤔

@Lucy ouuuf.... sooo scary isn't it ! ... during the day when I'm watching its fine... but at night I need to find something to stop him rolling 😓

They’re allowed to sleep on their stomach once they can roll both ways, and they are sleeping on a firm flat mattress that is completely clear of anything else in the cot including things like mesh cot bumpers. You should still continue to put them down on their back to sleep

@Rafaella honestly don’t, my partner being calm about everything is stressing me out more than the baby these days 😅

If he can get there I promise you he's fine. Just leave him be and he won't suffocate. Only way he will is if there are obstructions in the cot such as blankets. He'll be able to move his head side to side

This was my biggggggest concern when my baby was smaller...tummy sleeping...i personally did everything to avoid it...i was paranoid 24/7 They say lots of things but you know as a mom that you won't be getting any sleep if you are 1% unsure or uneasy about their sleep...my son is 13 months now and i STILL flip him on his back when he rolls. I know i'm overdoing it. Most babies are fine if they can roll back. Its called childs pose for a reason. Its instinct the way they learn to move and sleep. We just gotta make sure there arent any obstacles in their way

If he can get on his front then he's fine. Can he roll back? Try not to worry, some babies prefer to sleep on their front. Take any other blankets etc out of the cot

That blanket is not breathable at all. Hes at risk with that, not the rolling. He needs the mattress and the fitted crib sheet, nothing else. If theres anything close to his face, he can suffocate by "rebreathing"

According to the lullaby trust if they roll themselves then leave them however that it with an empty crib so you would need to remove those blankets, the grey fleece one is not breathable and will make baby sweat, also no rolled up up blankets

I would leave him like that if he's comfortable and sleeping well. But remove all the bits in the cot

The fluffy blanket is definitely attracting them to cuddle on to it😅 Just for safety remove everything from the cot apart the breathable sheet and the rest will be fine 😊

I would personally take everything out of the crib, and remove that thick blanket from underneath, as that isn’t breathable and it’s risk of overheating. If she’s facing down, it’s risk of suffocation actually. I’m not here to argue and of course you do what you think is best. Anyways, when my girl started to roll over to her front, we left her. She’s had amazing head & neck control at that stage, at was able to roll onto her side (not fully back).

I’d definitely work on encouraging your baby to learn to roll back my boy loves sleeping on his front, I always turned him back before he knew how to roll back, I spent time teaching him to roll back. Also try and encourage your baby to turn their head to the side instead of facing down🥴 good luck

So we’re having the same issue, and I let him stay on his front only if his face isn’t in the mattress. If his face is buried in the mattress, he could suffocate or only breathe in the carbon dioxide he’s breathing out. Both of which are dangerous and cause sids, which is why it’s recommended babies sleep on their backs. I spoke to the heath visitor about it yesterday, and she said as long as his airways are clear, and there’s no loose bedding, leave him on his stomach

@Aleah this isn’t safe to use

@Lucy and the reason being why?

@Danielle I only have these bits in there during the day. At night his cot is completely empty xx

@Lucy I have mesh cot bumpers too! LOL should I remove these ?

@Naomi loooool! 😅

@Emily - Jade ahhhhhh ... are you sure ?! What about mesh bumpers in the cot ? 😅

@Aina thanks for sharing xx

@Rebecca he can't roll back yet... he tries to but can't This then results to him being frustrated and crying loool hence why he wakes me up alot at the moment x

@Jackie I never leave blankets overnight.. only during the day where I'm monitoring xx

@Louise sorry I should of mentioned in my post that this isn't his crib he sleeps in at night.. its just the one I use spare downstairs where he is watched during the day xx

@Laura 😅♥️

@Rafaella they are not FDA approved because there has been fatalities in the past same with the use of blankets, teddys ect but there are some these days that are much safer to use with different breathe able materials and that are stuck flat down to the basinet so they can’t get tangled in them. I was also told by baby bunting that they legally can’t tell me that the portable cots they sell there are safe to sleep in because the mattress isn’t breathable to the standards of an FDA approval.. 🤷🏼‍♀️ everything comes with just using it responsibly..

@Georgia thanks for sharing ♥️

@Rafaella yes I'm absolutely sure. The mesh bumpers are fine as they are already a part of the cot. It's only a hazard when you add additional things

@Clarissa how do you teach them to roll back ? 😓😅 He has great neck muscles and is strong headed... but just can't figure out to roll back x

@Parris thanks for sharing... I'm always stressing about this x

@Aleah this looks interesting ! But is it safe to use ??? Because if baby rolls face into it, they can suffocate ??... x

@Emily - Jade I've tied the mesh bumpers on xx

@Rafaella this is what I said by my second comment this isn’t the exact one my mum got me so this one may not but mine looks exactly the same other then the material but velcros together underneath the cot mattress so it acts as the same as bumpers with a fully breathable fabric and it can’t move from where I place it 🤷🏼‍♀️

@Aleah OK hun x

@Danielle from my research I thought mesh bumpers were safe because they are breathable... but who knows. I guess anything comes with a risk 🤷... in the day he is perfectly fine - I watch him but I do appreciate the advice x

A friend of mines baby only slept on his stomach from birth. Also I’m not sure if it’s already been mentioned but Newton makes a crib mattress that’s extremely breathable. Like full on face plant in it and still breath fine, might be a good option to ease any worries?

First off let me say the issue with this in general is you are going to get alot of mixed reviews. Yes until they can roll themselves over safely it is recommended they dont sleep on their stomachs at night. There are also the side sleeper things that i saw someone else share. I will say how your little one is sleeping he does have his hand under his face helping him not be full face first. Definitely look into the breathable mattress. My kids slept side or tummy their whole infant era and also rolled themselves both ways by 2weeks old but most importantly had great head control (3 and 4 now and they sleep crazy 😂) my daughter had extreme reflux until almost 3 so we had to put the elevated mattress thing or let her sleep how she needed so she would attempt to get some sleep in her own bed.

There are countries where everyone including grandparents slept on their tummies and they are alive to tell the tales minus all the fancy baby gadgets the non tummy sleeping countries have!!!! Sleeping on your tummy has so many benefits 1. Relief for tummy aches 2. Helps burping 3. Helps avoid choking 4. Helps release wind and gas 5. Eliminates that hand flailing or whatever it's called that swaddling is said to be for 6. Baby literally sleeps longer and is calmer Simply turn your baby's head every so often till they can do it themselves!!!! If the baby keeps turning to that position and they aren't in distress it probably means that's their most comfortable position.

@Rafaella yes, you don’t want anything additional in the cot including bumpers :)

@Aleah babies should sleep on a firm, flat mattress and these would mean that isn’t the case

@Sarah I'll look into it thankyou ☺️

@Emily mixed reviews is in everything 😅😅 I just wanted some advice on how to handle it because my daughter was different and never rolled like this x

@Lav interesting.... OK hun I'll try this instead x

@Lav yeah this is awful advice. Sleeping on stomach was one of the big risk factors for Sid’s. It’s why the back to sleep campaign was so big in the UK. Just because some people were okay doesn’t mean it’s safe to do it

Mine did this too. She couldn't roll back over yet and it stressed me out so bad, but she did have very good head control and soon after learned to roll back over. After the first few times of flipping her back over and waking her up I just let her sleep on her tummy. I would check her every few hours even though she was sleeping through the night though.

My daughter slept on her stomach from around 4/5months old , I would turn her onto her back but she’s just roll again. She still sleeps like it now and she’s 9months , try not to worry there’s not much you can do Xx

So many different opinions 😅😅😅 I'll try all of them ahhaa

My son has slept on his stomach from being a few weeks old. Though he couldn’t roll and still cannot, he is able to lift his head and move it to each side. Logic tells me it’s better to allow him to sleep on his tummy with his arms at the side of him to allow him the freedom to turn his head and get air.
