Fever

Hi everyone. Just looking for advice. My girl is 6 months and today is her third day with a high fever. Highest it reached was 103.9 and the lowest it goes down (with medicine) is 101. And then it will rise again within a couple hours of giving medicine. She has no other symptoms except today she doesn’t seem interested in food like she’s normally been. I took her to the ER twice and the said she’s negative for covid, flu, & RSV. They tried collecting her pee to test for UTI but not enough pee was caught in the bag when we were there at the hospital, we waited till 4am. They told us to keep giving her meds and make soonest appt with pediatrician but they won’t see her till May 1st. Any suggestions on what might be wrong with her? Should I take her back to ER?? Idk. I’m just so scared because I’m a first time mom and I keep thinking the worst.

My son had a viral infection that kept him feverish for 6 days. Ruled out the 4 common illnesses, was told to just wait it out and he did in fact get better. He didn’t have any other symptoms and sounds like your daughter, his fever never really went away, it just went down, then back up. We kept giving him fluids and feeding him like normal. Our doctor has told us a high or low fever doesn’t matter, what matters is how your baby is acting. If a low fever but a miserable baby, that is more concerning than a high fever with a content baby. Hope your daughter gets well soon.

Is she taking liquids? Assuming your doctor is ok with this, I would keep giving the Tylenol on a regular schedule, and also Advil (again, not medical advice. Ask your doctor). If you have questions about dosing call a 24 hour pharmacy. Pharmacists are very helpful and knowledgeable about meds. I would call pediatrician back and ask for a sooner appointment. Reiterate the numbers and that even with regular meds you can’t get it below 101. If they stick with May 1 ask them to document the fever numbers (not just “fever” but the numbers) and her food refusal in her chart and that they can’t accommodate you for an appointment for over a week. If you have MyChart you could also message the doctor directly.

Hugs. It is so hard when they have fevers.

I used to work in pediatrics but I just want to clarify I'm not a pediatrician it's just things i would normally translate for people who spoke Spanish. If she feels really warm give her a cool bath, the colder the better to regulate her body to cool down. It'll make her really cold with more shivers at first, but her internal body temp will improve slowly. Also no covering her with any blankets or any clothing. Even if she's shivering and crying. Keep her in diaper only. She's a 6 month old so unfortunately I cannot give any medication recommendations that could potentially harm her so ask for an over the phone suggestion with a licensed nurse or with your doctor by relaying the message that you want to make sure how much dosage you can give her for her age. Normally for 2+ year Olds they're ok to alternate with motrin and tylenol every 4 hours for 2 days. After days if there's still fever you take them to ER to see if they can change the dosage or prescribe something else.

I don't know what your baby has. It sounds like a viral infection, but not too sure and again I'm not a doctor to be able to make a Decision like that. Also, as a holistic medicine my mother's culture recommended that I also give my child a cabbage bath. I'm not sure why but it usually helps cool his internal temp. I did that for my child when he was an infant and it seemed to work. As a toddler, I don't because with just a cool bath alone it usually went away fairly quick. Another holistic medicine that helped with fevers with infants was have 1/2 cold water and 1/2 rubbing alcohol in a large bowl, have multiple small cloths/ small face towels soaked in the mixture. Squeeze out excess of the liquid just enough to keep the small towels damped. Place the towels on the forehead of your child, chest, back and feet. Once it dries up or warms up. Keep soaking, squeezing the excess, and placing them until you notice her temp is reduced enough. Usually I did this and gave the medication 15 minutes prior to starti

Ing and within 15-20 minutes my child's fever would go back to normal temp for 4 hours. I'd have to repeat it again at least 2 more times throughout the day but it meant my child would not have any fevers by the next day and never go higher than 102.7F

Did they check her ears? Also idk if it’s different for girls but when I took my son they put a catheter to take out the pee because he wouldn’t go on the bag. Fever that last up to a week is okay at least that what they told me in the ER last month. My son had fever for 6 days turned out to be a viral infection.
