I think it would be easier to buy diapers that need their elastics replaced. Most moms sell them for free or $1 each.
I have some experience with free hand sewing and also have started learning how to use a sewing machine. that diaper looks really good!
@Alison I personally think it’s too much work to try and do by hand. If you have a sewing machine, you can make diapers, you can also make inserts, flats or pre folds, but most of these are easier to accomplish with a serger. It is a money saver if you already have the machines; you will need to consider the cost of equipment before deciding if it’s actually cost effective. I found fabric on sale, that was about $60, I was able to make 12 preflats, with boosters, those typically run about $35 each. For me this was a money saved, but I also have sewing machines and a serger.
I made newborn flats that I also fold and use as inserts now in the toddler age - I have no sewing experience so this was best for me. Measuring tape, scissors & bamboo French terry fabric. 2.5 years & two babies- still going strong!
See if there are any diaper banks or community baby showers in your area you could get free diapers to cut down the cost
@Alisia yes! I forgot to mention the cloth option; they help families that need cloth! https://www.theclothoption.org
I did but only for holiday diapers. I made pocket diapers and made inserts out of flannel. It was a bit of a learning curve but im sure if I made a whole stack of them it would get easier and faster.
