Work contact and KIT days.

How much contact has everyone had from their employer since being on maternity leave? I went on mat leave in the Summer and have heard nothing from my employer/company. I heard through a colleague another member of staff (who started mat leave after me) has just started KIT days. These weren't discussed before I started mat leave, and so I'm wondering if these are usually initiated by the employer or the employee. I'm a first time mum, was relatively new to the company so honestly have no idea. So looking for others experience

It would normally be initiated by you rather than the employer, but probably something you would normally discuss before mat leave. I called my manager to arrange a couple after 8 months and she also told me if there was any significant training happening she would let me know so I could decide if I wanted to come along and do a KIT then. Normally you can do up to 10.

Hey 😊 you can email your employer and ask to take up to 10 KIT days. Completely normal, even if those weren’t mentioned prior to Mat Leave x

I used to speak to my manager/team mates a lot as they would ask after the baby quite often. When both of my kids were about 6 months old I then had a catch up with my manager and started putting a plan in place to use my kit days but my manager initiated contact

Thanks for the replies ladies. Would it be the manager I contact or HR?

At my workplace KIT days are initiated by the employee. I messaged the manager and Cc'ed HR, partially to make sure I would get paid for the KIT days at the right time. This might depend a bit on your company's written policy.

We have a maternity pack sent to us by our managers and the KIT days were advised in there so I was made aware and it was discussed too. I can’t remember who initiated it but my manager always asked if I wanted to and there was no pressure on doing them or even when. I’ve been on maternity leave for 6 months now. I’m in regular contact with some of my team socially and my manager too and I’ve even been into work a couple of times with my little one to visit. I haven’t taken any KIT days yet but my cover has actually got another role so I will be taking some soon to assure my team and done of my responsibilities aren’t left undone while I’m off.

Kit days for me arent initiated by me. But you also get paid for kit days so it makes sense employers would aim for them not to occur. It is meant to make your work transition back easier.. by keeping you in the loop and informing you of any changes that will affect your job.
