Reducing hours after MAT leave

I requested to reduce to 13 hours, which is one long day on my ward. I also asked if I can do only weekend. (I did put in a few options when I can work it like Friday, Saturday night, combination of short shifts on Saturday or Sunday). This is because my partner is working Monday to Friday 9-5. We have 2 kids under 3. I don't want to use childcare due to costs and previous bad experience with it all. My manager approved the 13 hours but not the days due to skillset mix and also all the face to face training is Monday to Friday. Which I do get. But I was just wondering if anyone else managing their work without childcare? I only have my partner to help. I really thought we could make it work like I do weekends and my partner works Monday to Friday. Please help with ideas, many thanks for reading x

Hi, a lot of my colleagues in your position do as you said. They work weekends/nights whilst their partner works mon-fri. They try to do bank shifts regularly to top up their earnings too. Can your partner see what is available in terms of flexibility at his work place such as compressed hours/work from home or something? Would your manager give you set shifts on week days so you can explore options from there?
