Green poop

My baby girl is almost 5 weeks old and she’s been having green poop almost everyday at least twice a day. Not sure why because it’s usually a mustardy colour and everything else has been the same just the poop colour that’s changed and sometimes it smells too, anyone elses had this?. I exclusively breastfeed

i’ve been having the same problem, my pediatrician said it was something i was eating but honestly i haven’t been eating anything out of the ordinary.

Hey! My baby girl is also 5 weeks and I EBF. I asked the pediatrician about this and she asked if I have been eating more fruits/veggies - she said they commonly see that when moms diet improves. Can't hurt to ask your pediatrician what they think!

Sorry I should’ve said I’ve already spoken to the paediatrician and they said as long as everything else is fine it’s normal to have that colour sometimes. I’m just not sure the reason why tho

Possible green poop reasons: if baby is happy, then it’s just a variation of normal. If baby is fussy or grunting in pain and poop is green and frothy, baby could have a milk allergy and you should try to eliminate dairy from your diet. If baby is fussy or grunting in pain and poop is green but still seedy, you could have a foremilk/hind milk imbalance meaning that baby is getting too much of the sugary lactose rich foremilk and not enough of the fatty hind milk and you should nurse until completely empty on one side before switching breasts. If baby only latches to one, empty the other using a pump or hand express out to relieve engorgement. And yes, this can happen around this age when baby previously was fine with your diet and/or nursing habits. It actually starts around this age.

@Misha wow thanks for that! do you know how I can get the foremilk/hind milk balanced? I’m still at a loss for which one it is as it’s usually different and sometimes she strains because she’s constipated so I hardly know the difference

It’s not something you can balance. It just means your baby needs to nurse longer to get to the fatty hind milk. The imbalance occurs when babies switch breasts too often or pop off too soon, which makes them only get the foremilk. Try and empty one breast completely, even if baby pops off and you burp them, put them back on the same breast to completely empty it before offering the second.

Hey! 6 week old exclusively breast baby here too and I’m having the same problem. I always nurse on just one side at each feed to make sure she’s getting the hind milk and her poo is always green. At a loss really as my diet is the same as it was when she was born when it was yellow and seedy. Unsure if to be worried or not but she seems happy and content :( has had some oral thrush (treated with nystatin but green poo was before this!?)🤦🏽‍♀️ xx

@Sheridan I read online that if you massage your boob and jiggle it before giving to baby it should mix the milk (lmao that’s what Google said ‘like a milkshake’) but it actually worked for me and she’s been having less green poops idk if it’s coincidence or what but yea. And what’s the symptoms for oral thrush? How did you know she had it? Xxx
