Help

My baby the past few weeks has been extremely fussy on the breast after that first rush of milk. Hes pushing his legs out, arching his back, scratching the back of his head, pulling at my nipple and burying his head in my breast. It’s so distressing and I don’t know what else to do. I’ve been dairy free for about 2 weeks. I’ve phoned the hospital and they need a referral but the gp isn’t taking me seriously. I love breastfeeding and it’s really upsetting me now. I don’t know if it’s cause he doesn’t want the rush of milk to stop and he’s trying to get more milk and getting frustrated or cause it’s hurting his belly.

My bottle fed baby is acting the same at the moment, she drinks a little bit then starts pushing herself up, turning her head away from me when drinking, burying her head into me, messing around with the teat in her mouth.. maybe it could be a phase they go through around this age due to a regression/development?

It’s not anything to do with your milk and you’re not doing anything wrong, just an age and stage but I know how hard it is❤️

@Hannah yeah this is what I was hoping! But then he’s showing a couple other signs of an allergy aswell like abit of eczema and he’s been congested since he was 2 weeks old. Honestly finding it so difficult atm x

@Hannah thanks babe I really hope so x

@Laura it could honestly be anything!! There’s so many but if you are sure it’s an allergy trust your gut and keep at it with the GP, you know best❤️

Do you think it could be reflux? My little boy has CMPA and silent reflux. It’s awful. He squirms during feeds and looks uncomfortable all of the time. He’s on meds now and it’s so much better xx

Mine became really fussy on my breast at about 10 weeks. I found taking him off for a minute, having a quick walk around and then trying again seemed to help. I think he had a moment to calm down and so did I. I think it’s just a development thing

My baby does the same I think its because of fast let down or because she gets gas! I usually find giving her a break or rubbing her back to make her burp helps! I get you it is definitely distressing but totally normal!

Have you been soy free as well as dairy free?

@Cara I’m not sure, he can be sick now and again normally like an hour after a feed tbh but it’s not often. He gets his wind up easily aswell x

@Charlie yeah about the same age as mine, will give this a go xx

@Hana no not yet I’m trying wheat free aswell now. But do you think soya? X

@Laura my little one has silent reflux. So he’s not sick. He’s constantly uncomfortable. Arching his back, his legs and arms are constantly moving. He grunts. Xx

I had the same with my baby and it was so upsetting! It felt like breastfeeding went from being something comforting to him, to something that was causing him discomfort, and I was soo sad and worried. It stopped by itself after a few weeks and now his feeding is great. I think it was related to my fast letdown which my baby learned to handle better. I still don’t know what the root cause is but here are some things that helped: 1. Not hungry - this took me a while to figure out but sometimes my baby was actually not hungry 😅 I was so used to him being constantly starving in the newborn stage! He wants to suck for comfort and is annoyed that milk is coming out 2. Staying calm: I was getting upset and baby was matching my vibes. I started to take the attitude of ‘ok, I know he can eat when he’s ready/wants to so if it’s not working let’s just take a short break’. Staying calm helped him stay calm

I contacted the NCT free breastfeeding hotline and they provided some links: Refers to evenings but fussiness can happen at any time. https://laleche.org.uk/fussy-evenings-with-a-newborn/ https://kellymom.com/hot-topics/fussy-while-nursing/ https://kellymom.com/bf/got-milk/supply-worries/fast-letdown/

@Laura so dairy and soy kinda go hand in hand so yeah try without soya

@Laura my LB was like this I had to go wheat/milk/soya and egg free and tbh I was starving and gave into dairy free formula. I was devastated as have always bf but the difference was instant. Does he have any other symptoms ? Bad poos or rash? X

@Bella oh god no way. Yeah he has abit of eczema but it’s not that bad tbh. His poos are always runny and a little mucousy x

@Laura I took my son’s dirty nappy to the paediatrician to confirm allergy. A lot of mucus isn’t good. They say only a tiny percentage of diary passes into breast milk, and yes too many babies are misdiagnosed these days with cmpa but for me using the formula was a total gamechanger. Maybe try pumping first and trying your milk in a bottle to see any difference as maybe gulping air with a fast letdown ? X
