Nutramigen

Has anyone actually had any positives with Nutramigen. We are trialling tomorrow as my little boy has silent reflux/rosy red dry skin on his cheeks/fussy with feeds and doesn’t take much and some other mild symptoms. All I hear is how awful it is and just made their baby worse.

My 5 mouth old has been on it for the last week. He’s been EBF up until now. In one way it’s the easiest formula in the world to make up out and about but it tastes disgusting… and my LO is not keen on having to take in at room temp. (Can’t be warmed up) and he’s obviously used to body temp milk.

My little boy was put on it earlier in the week and he’s been horrific. Always been uncomfortable feeding but he’s a million times worse. Being sick more. He looked constantly in pain and crying which isn’t like him at all. I’ve put him back onto pepti myself and waiting to speak to the GP x

Better than soy. Worked just fine

@Zara how did he cope with going back onto your original formula? I’m worried if my little boy doesn’t take to this one he will have a complete aversion to the bottle x

We've thrived on it! My lo has cmpa related seizures and we got given it to try first and even though it has a tiny amount of the broken down protein in he took to it immediately and loved it and it cleared up all his symptoms including his ige symptoms like the wheezing etc and we never had to switch around. It can make them a bit more sicky with how thin it is but if that happens carobel is the answer for that! X

My now toddler loved it as a baby. Was on it from 2 months old until 18months. We didn’t have a problem with it at all. As soon as she switched to that all the fusing and crying stopped

Neocate gold was the only formula that worked for us! We had true CMPA so hydrolyzed formulas just aren't suitable.

@YazmynJade I’m so glad to hear a really good outcome! Really hoping my little boy will be more comfortable on this x

@Amy My 7 week old has been on it about 2.5 weeks and he is soo much better than he was (not perfect but a massive difference). We have slowly weaned breast feeds but straight swapped the formula. His rash was awful and it’s almost completely gone, his poops have gone from water 10-15times a day to more normal (still frequent and a bit explosive) his tummy no longer gurgles and unsettles him after a feed. He’s taking more and finally gaining weight. He drank the bottles from the start even though it does smell, and I’d say his reflux is better than it was although for the first week he seemed to sick up more then he had been but that seems to be settling ☺️ I’ve also been warming it a little, I was told it can affect the probiotics in it as heat can kill the good bacteria but won’t affect the actual formula etc 🤷‍♀️

My lo was on nutramigen and hated it. The first bottle I gave her she screamed the house down. What I found to work best was to slowly add a scoop in. So 4 scoops old milk one scoop new. When she was taking that fine id do 2 scoops etc etc. In the end we ended up on neocate as she was still reacting on that milk. Its really tough mama honestly but you gotta do whaT you gotta do x

@Amy just remember to give it a good trial it's usually 6 weeks and can and usually does get worse before better but if you know it's not working or you get to 6 weeks and there's no improvement ask to swap x

@Amy he’s better on pepti but we had to trial normal formula a couple of weeks ago so went onto kendamil and it was horrendous 😭 He’s more settled back on pepti, nutramigen was just as bad as normal formula! We started him back on pepti last night so going to ask the GP to keep that as his prescription. We also wonder if he’s got silent reflux so wonder if he needs something for that x

Luckily my son has never been fussy about what brand of formula he was having or what temperature he had as we gave him it at various temperatures from birth so he didn't get too used to only having milk warm so the switch over to Nutramigen was easy and he took to it straight away. He had very severe cmpa to the point that it would cause seizures and stop him breathing along with all the usual symptoms the same as @YazmynJade experienced so was initially anxious about using this as it still contained casein, albeit fully hydrolyzed however looking back it was absolutely the right decision as him having that small amount meant his tolerance was being built up gradually and by the time it came to starting the milk ladder he flew through it without a single reaction. The other benefit of it is how much easier it is to make the bottles, can just have bottles with pre boiled water ready to go for the day kept at room temperature and just add the formula when you need it.

As others have said though the smell is awful so I imagine the taste is too but to help with the switch if your baby doesn't like it you can add a drop of vanilla essence to help as its definitely worth sticking with it as the results are fantastic.

@Lucy try a couple of drops of vanilla essence to help with the taste and if they're struggling with the temperature start them off with it at the temperature they're used to and gradually work your way down to room temperature over a week or so. The reason they say to not warm it is because warming can make the lgg less effective so it's perfectly safe to warm it to help with the transition.

@Sophie thanks for this. Sorry your little boy had such trouble to begin with. Luckily with my little one it’s more to do with silent reflux and being really quite uncomfortable with feeding and sometimes not taking enough At the moment it’s not affecting his weight but I’m trying everything possible to not get to that point and to make him happier with feeding. Thank you for this though it gives me some hope he will take to it well and may just need some support . He went through a stage of only having half of what he should be having so I just have a big fear he will go back to that xx

My little one was on it for 5 weeks to investigate CMPA (the non IG kind). He thrived, gained weight well and had frequent dirty nappies. Something that was a struggle before then. The milk smells horrendous, but it worked a treat healing our little boys gut and now he’s on HiPP with no problems.

@Kendis what symptoms did your little one have before xx

When my toddler was little we used it for about a month, however we didn’t read the instructions properly to begin with and were using boiling water for it! Be sure to read the instructions thoroughly as not all are meant to have a hot shot. It was fine and seemed to help but it stank and didn’t taste very nice so I ended up exclusively pumping and cutting dairy from my diet.

When my baby was diagnosed with cmpa at 1month she was put on nutramigen and she is happy with it so far- she is 4months now

It's been a came changer for our little one! I'd say it takes a couple of weeks for baby to get used to it but persevere. We had positive results after like 2 days 🙂

@Amy So sorry, only just seen this. My little one ended up in A&E with severe constipation and a distended belly and suspected colic after being on aptamil since birth. He’s been on hipp organic 2 weeks now and loves it. There’s light at the end of the tunnel xx
